SIX
A LIVE SIX SPEAKER SURROUND SOUND SHOWCASE.
SIX is an iterative, experimental, surround sound performance series held in Portland Oregon.
In lieu of traditional listening orientation, the music and sound is reproduced in an open, multi-directional format. This allows the performer, sound, environment, and audience to form an exploratory relationship. Walk around, lay down ( bring a pillow or blanket if you like ), experience the sound from different angles, and immerse yourself in the art of Listening.
We do request that conversations be kept to a minimum, and that you respect the artists involved by taking anything louder outside of the main listening area. Please set your mobile devices to silent alerts.
There is no admission fee for the show, however we encourage supporting the artists involved by purchasing merchandise, or contributing via donation.
"PRAXIS | PRACTICE | MODULATION : AN INFORMAL DISCUSSION OF EXPERIMENTAL ELECTRONIC MUSIC ON THE WEST COAST."
For this iteration of SIX, we are also encouraging dialogue between the artists involved, and all in attendance.
Artists Yann Novak, Robert Crouch, and Marcus Fischer host a brief panel discussion about the practice, performance, process, and exposition of experimental electronic music on the left coast of the US. Collectively, the three artists represent a veritable deluge of installations, performances, audio visual media, and most of the major urban creative hubs from Seattle to Los Angeles.
It's our hope that with their experience, and contributions from all participants, that we may glimpse a framework of progress, collaboration, and experimentation regarding alternative venues, performance methodology / praxis, and audience perception.
SETH NEHIL, a composer, performance-maker and teacher of Sound and Video at PNCA and WSUV, will moderate the panel.
Please show up @ 5 PM for the discussion, which will last for about an hour.
Performances to follow.
ARTIST INFORMATION..
YANN NOVAK is a sound, video and installation artist living and working in Los Angeles. His work utilizes different forms of digital documentation as a point of departure. Through the digital manipulation of these sound and image files, his works serve as a translation from documents of personal experiences into an open ended autobiographical narrative. By choosing subject matter that is also relatable to the audience, Novak’s work creates a hybrid state, balancing between his own personal history and that of the audience.

THE OO-RAY is the alias of Ted Laderas, an improvisatory and experimental cellist from Portland, Oregon. A scientist of biologic systems by day, he extends his experimental attitude to exploring the outer possibilities of the cello, often distorting, looping, or pitch-shifting his instrument beyond recognizability into waves of reverberation and extended drones. Inspired by the gauzy textures of My Bloody Valentine, he calls his style “shoegazer cello” or “chamber drone”. His music explores the realms of electroacoustic, shoegazer, and ambient.
