On March 11, 2011, Japan was struck by an unprecedented magnitude 9 earthquake. The quake triggered a 10 meter-high tsunami that submerged over 443 square km of coastal area, destroying everything in its path and sweeping across cities, villages and farmland. Waves up to 30 meters-high traveled as far as 10 km inland devastating the northeast coast. Japan experienced its worst humanitarian disaster since the Second World War with more than 27,000 people dead or missing, and well over 490,000 displaced. In addition, the earthquake and tsunami left the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant seriously damaged. In response, the Japanese government had declared a state of nuclear emergency which has since then forced the evacuation of thousands of more residents. The nuclear situation continues to be a cause of great concern, consequently hampering relief activities in the affected regions and across the country. www.peaceboat.org PARTIES 4 PEACE www.parties4peace.co m/ Parties 4 Peace was founded in the year 2002 in Japan and continues to raise awareness through music and art as it travels from Tokyo to New York City. Red Dot Relief is a call to action in a bid to raise money and spread awareness of the disaster stricken regions of Japan. Spearheaded by VIsionquest (Seth Troxler) & Friends alongside Crosstown Rebels and the TuningSpork Efforts Team. The aim is to influence others to follow and donate whatever they can to the disaster fund by involving not only artists but the wider community in supporting this cause including event organizers, promoters, club owners, clubbers, agencies, music labels and the supporting press. JAY HAZE http://www.residenta dvisor.net/dj/jayhaze It’s difficult to summarize Jay Haze’s ten-year musical career, but in concentrated form: producer, DJ and record label owner. Whether working in the studio or behind the decks in the club, he is a pro at getting people to react. Jay left Philadelphia in the early 00's and is now based in Berlin, also home of his house/techno record labels TuningSpork and Contexterrior. He DJ's several times per year in the city’s famed Watergate club, and also holds a quarterly residency at Fabric, London – in addition to his stops throughout Europe, Asia, North and South America. Jay has also released tracks and remixes on literally dozens of other labels, often under a variety of pseudonyms, such as Fuckpony (BPitch, Get Physical and Cocoon) and Sub Version (Soul Jazz). Apart from his solo work, Jay has collaborated with the likes of Ricardo Villalobos and Samim, and has remixed numerous other artists such as DJ Hell & P. Diddy, Gui Boratto and even Yann Tiersen’s theme from Amelie, which became a crossover hit. Haze’s productions constantly find their way into the sets of top-tier DJ's like Richie Hawtin and M.A.N.D.Y. Starting with his debut full-length Love for a Strange World (Kitty-Yo, 2005) and continuing with Love & Beyond (TuningSpork, 2008), Jay stepped outside of dance music into other realms such as pop, hip-hop and dubstep. His adventurous mix compilation Fabric47 (2009) brought immense praise, and it also launched his new campaign DJ's for DRC to help victims in the war-torn Congo: he donated all his money from the CD sales toward the charity Merlin, and having encouraged a number of other DJ's to donate money from gigs, aims to travel to the Congo to shoot a documentary and raise awareness. Still active on the music front, of course, Jay has just released the second Fuckpony album and has been focusing on crafting new sounds for other vocalists. JOHN SELWAY http://www.residenta dvisor.net/dj/johnsel way From the early 90's to the present, John Selway has built a high quality catalog of productions, both on his own and as a collaborator in various artist and label projects. From his first electronic band Chaotic Sound Matrix, to his major contributions to the early productions of Deep Dish; from his first success in the techno world as part of the seminal New York duo Disintegrator to the most successful of his collaborations, Smith & Selway, and his deep and minimal techno label CSM; from the intelligent electro-funk of Synapse and Serotonin Records, the electro and synth-pop of Memory Boy to the wild improvisational eclecticism of the Rancho Relaxo Allstars, Selway has created and helped to create one of the most stylistically wide ranging bodies of work in the world of electronic dance music. In addition to his composition and production work, Selway is an accomplished DJ. Technically skilled and stylistically versatile, he cut his teeth at early raves in DC and NYC, hitting his stride as a world-class, world traveling DJ by the mid to late 90's. Currently, he maintains two primary stylistic directions in his DJ sets: future-forward, grooving techno/tech-house and minimal and - as inspired by his love of early electronic dance music - dynamic, energetic and fun disco, italo, and electro. Selway's live performances, primarily in collaboration but also as a solo artist, have been as stylistically wide ranging as his productions, from Disintegrator playing hard techno in front of a 15,000 person rave crowd to vocalist and violinist on tour with the Rancho Relaxo Allstars. He continues to perform with Rancho, his solo techno live set and together with Christian Smith. With an accomplished past to support him, Selway's artistic versatility continues to be his strength now and beyond. DJ KUSDA www.vimeo.com/343748 51 This year Parties 4 Peace and the Patagonica Collective are pleased to announce the winner of the Patagonica DJ Contest VOL4 in Tokyo as Kusda, from the Raft Tokyo team in Japan. A true nature lover and talented artist, Kusda began DJing in the year 2000 and in 2006 traveled to Ibiza for the first time, where he was influenced by popular clubs such as DC10. ERIC CLOUTIER www.residentadvisor. net/dj/ericcloutier Born and bred in Michigan, and currently based in Brooklyn, Eric Cloutier is one of a new generation of American DJs bridging the gap between dance music's past and its future. His sets have a sprawling depth and sophistication that fuses the brooding intensity of tripping techno with the mechanic funk of contemporary house. He's a DJ for whom quality—above all else—is the watchword.
