A rather exciting collaborative effort has emerged from Melbourne's thriving electronic music scene. Steve Stevens is the new monicker for two Australian heavyweights: Jamie Stevens, founding member of Australia's innovative globe-trotting live act Infusion and Steve Ward, Chameleon Recordings' mastermind and rising star of the techno world. "When we get together in the studio, we just understand each other" explains Ward. "We're on the same wavelength but at the same time we'd bring something to the table that neither of us would have done alone. We're workaholics and just have so much energy to throw into production and playing this stuff to people so to collaborate just seemed natural." Their love of bouncing, energetic percussive techno, warm house vibes and a desire to push their own limits of production spurred the idea of the collaboration.
Ward, who has previously collaborated with Carl Cox, Psycatron and Peter Horrevorts and had his productions revered by Joris Voorn and Dosem continues: "We came up with the idea of a live setup that we're calling '3D Loops' where we'd improvise with loops and sounds, both our own music and other people's while we were touring around Europe last year.
The idea was to cut up loops into tiny parts on our computers and we'd blend them live through filtering and mixing on the fly, changing the sound as we went, adapting to the crowd and creating something new on the spot." Stevens continues "We'll cut tracks into sections, map them all out, have our own synth parts, drum loops, live on-the-fly drum programming and mash it all together into a beautiful, funk-filled noise! It's a perfect blend of DJing and live performance using Ableton Live triggered with touchAble on 2 iPads plus a Native Instrument's Maschine to do live step-sequencing. With touchAble, we have the ability to mangle sounds into rhythmic glitches or vocals into a wash of ambience. We can re-invent and re-create our music as we go with that set-up."
"I've always been a lover of improvising house and techno in a live environment" continues Stevens. "With Infusion, we started as a live electronic act, trying to find ways of presenting electronic sounds in a live, free-form way. Only after that did we think about recording!" Those recordings with Infusion earned them 2 Aria awards and played by countless DJs from Sasha to Paul Oakenfold, John Digweed to Pete Tong. Their jaw-dropping live shows took the stage at every club and festival around the world from Glastonbury to Coachella, Womb in Tokyo to Fabric in London.
Ward adds "Jamie and I are great friends and I think that is imperative when playing live. You need to know each other well and enjoy the process. For us, the Steve Stevens is about having a great time and delivering something fresh every time and taking risks."
With their EP nearly complete which contains a conga-mad monster that both Stevens and Ward have hammered separately in their DJ sets for a high profile label that cannot be revealed as yet, plus remixes for Infusion and Dousk on Kasey Taylor's Vapour recordings, you can be sure that clubs and festivals around the world will be jumping and smiling to the Steve Stevens brand of techno for a long time yet. And with their '3D Loops' live concept, they'll be delivering it with unique style and energy.
