BELOW party people love going all out, taking over streets, car parks and warehouses, and so it’s no massive surprise they have another series of huge events planned. These will be in association with Sven Vath’s Cocoon, and will take place a number of times over the next year. The first one will be on 3rd June 2012, on the streets of Birmingham, and will go under the title of Cocoon on the Street with Raresh, Dinky, Sascha Dive, DJ W!ld and Adam Shelton all playing.
All this will also take place across the same weekend as leading underground promotion, Below, turns 7 years old and takes the Rainbow Courtyard back to being just that – an open space for partying with natural brick work, plants and natural light...with Bloody Mary, Jordan Peak, Alex Arnout, Jane Fitz, Subb-An, Adam Shelton, Tristan da Cunha, Frenchy, Tom Craven and James Cotterill all playing.
Cocoon Heroes is the name of the part held each week out at Amnesia, in Ibiza, and surely the same sort of madness will go down here with wild fireworks, mad dancers, clowns, colours and all sorts of extra promotion in true Cocoon style.
The music will come from Romanian Raresh with his more stripped back minimal grooves, Dinky who also favours stripped back sounds and has produced for labels like Visionquest and Perlon, where Sascha Dive goes super deep with his elongated grooves. Finally, Frenchman DJ W!ld brinks some jacking tech house edge with his amped up style, and Birmingham champion Adam Shelton complete the line-up.

And so a potted history of this now renowned venue, The Rainbow: In 2005 when BELOW threw their first rave it was alfresco, blasted brick with only spots of graffitti, quirky simple fairy lights and palm plants that created an environment completely unique to Birmingham. Then, in 2010, The Rainbow was given a noise abatement order and was given no choice but to build a sound proof roof discounting any natural sun light and sadly removing some of the attraction of the space. It kept character but was different; very dark, very 'clubby' and so still continued to shine with its unique raw feel. However, the sunshine was missed, and so to celebrate Below’s 7th Birthday the place is being stripped back to how it was with a dark interior, bringing back plants, fairy lights and natural light. So, if you ever experienced Below back in the day then you were luck, but now you can experience it all over again.
First up for the Below line-up, French house and techno mistress Bloody Mary will be headlining, with One Records young sensation, Jordan Peak, next on the line-up. His rough and ready tech house sound has taken him all over Europe recently, whilst Dogmatik boss Alex Arnout has been doing the same for years with his own great productions and those of other talents he has discovered like Maja Jane.
Of course, One Records main men Adam Shelton and Subb-An are also on the line-up having had a quite incredible year smashing it up everywhere from the WMC to fabric and just about every other club that’s worth its salt. Their productions too have found favour with a learned tech house crew and so will make a welcome return home. Popping over from legendary Leeds night Back to Basics will be Frenchy and Tristan da Cunha as well as Illusion Recordings main man Tom Craven and James Cotterill.
This is going to be a trip down memory lane and an introduction to the first of a series of Cocoon in The Street parties and the reintroduction of the infamous Rainbow Courtyard that literally put BELOW and The Rainbow on the map… don’t miss out!
