Following on from the sold out launch party at fabric in May, we present the next installment in our series of shows with Tiger Beer and FACT Magazine, that explore the UK’s most innovative record labels.
On Wednesday 13th June, we collaborate with Hyperdub, who will showcase not just the wide range of artists they represent, but also special guests who occupy a similar space creatively and who are inspiring the direction / sound of the label.
Actress has always done things his own way, purposefully moving away from his peers sonically – evident from the early days of his Werk label (which launched around the same time as Hyperdub and has released seminal tracks by not only Actress, but Zomby, Lone and Lukid) all the way through to his recent releases for the Honest Jon’s imprint. His latest long player ‘R.I.P’ defies categorisation, but continues the narrative established on 2008’s Hazyville.
Following on from his performance at Tate Modern in March (providing a soundtrack for Yayori Kusama’s immersive exhibit), Actress plays a very rare live set for friend and associate Kode 9.
Whilst the UK was mutating techno and hip hop into jungle, producers on the other side of the Atlantic were undertaking their own experiments with the same components, but coming up with something quite different – most notably, the sound of juke, also known as footwork, coming out of Chicago. This mutant strain of electronica has found resonance with a new breed of producers / DJs and we are pleased that Kode 9 has invited a duo credited with carrying on a tradition started by the likes of DJ Funk, Cajmere and the Dance Mania label – DJ Rashad & Spinn.

Having already released a number of works via Hyperdub in the past (arguably the labels first identifiably house / techno artist), 2012 bears witness to the emergence of a new, deeper sound from South London’s Cooly G. Due for release in July, her debut album ‘Playin Me’ juxtaposes her trademark percussive loops, with warm synths and her own vocals, for what promises to be an interesting foray into the unknown.
Completing the bill, for now, is the inimitable Scratcha DVA. A source of relentless energy and creativity, Scratcha has almost seamlessly transformed himself from one of the UK’s most important underground radio personalities (he was Rinse FM’s longest running breakfast show host) to one of Hyperdub’s most important new artists. His work is often defined as being UK funky, but his intricate works are far more than disposable bangers – his recently released debut album ‘Pretty Ugly’ employs not only a broad range of tempos and more experimentation than you might expect given his pedigree, but also beautiful vocals from the likes of Vikter Duplaix, Eglo’s Fatima and the nomadic Zaki Ibrahim.
