Jason Leach started the Subhead label whilst organising the infamous Growth parties in London with Phil Wells. The peerless producer Jamie Lidell became involved with the label and the techno triumvirate we now know as Subhead started to take shape. After Jamie left the group, Jason and Phil took to the the controls and Subhead hit the road with their no-nonsense style of unique off-kilter punk techno, playing all over the world. Jason and Phil's energetic live shows were something to be reckoned with. They were a class double act whether making "Ruckno" music or making us laugh. Sadly Phil passed away in 2007 and his sudden disappearance hit many of us hard. He was the life and soul of any party but that kind of energy doesn't just disappear. His presence continues to be felt through the legacy of the music he left behind and the influence he still has.
Despite the setback of Phils passing Jason has carried the Subhead torch and keeps moving his own sound into overdrive, putting out the acclaimed 'Death To Vinyl' series, and most recently the anthemic 'That Track' on Jerome Hill's Don't label - a timely reminder of Jason's supremacy in making the wrong sound right.
It's Jason's first Subhead appearance in Berlin in a long time and given the history he shares with the city through a close relationship with the Tresor club and label, his return has all the vital ingredients to make this special night indeed.
Ugly Funk have been a continual thorn in the side of purists since their inception. Emerging from the UKs free party scene in the mid-nineties they organised groundbreaking nights with Cristian Vogel, Squarepusher, The Advent and Tobias Schmidt, to name but a few, parties where Surgeon and Subhead would play some of their very first gigs. These events set the Ugly Funk standard for years to come.
Founded by Sikaflex, Ugly Funk have carved out their reputation as a freeform collective of DJs, producers and visual artists bonded by a certain kind of sonic glue. The Ugly Funk credo of 'No Skool' techno gives their DJs and producers a platform to play what they like, free of perceived genre boundaries but fully focussed on the dancefloor. The main residents are Sigma, Jerome Hill and Sikaflex.
Some of electronic musics most forward looking artists have played their best sets at these parties, where the music rather than the performer is the focal point, always supporting grass roots artists and avoiding the need for big names, Ugly Funk are totally committed to innovation and sound.
The Ugly Funk label started in 2002 and has been a conduit for sick electronics, putting out consistently high quality and edge-pushing records by the likes of Mark Hawkins, Esther Ofei, Cut Out, Crystal Distortion, Tobias Schmidt, and Aeox. A new vinyl assault is planned for the autumn.
In addition to regular events in London for over ten years, Ugly Funk have hosted rooms Bloc Weekend, Glade Festival and have taken their sound to parties around Europe, Russia and Brazil. There have been three parties in Berlin - at Hangar, RAW Tempel, and for their last visit, an Ugly Funk takeover of both rooms at Tresor.
Skank have been residents at Subland since the begining and are responsible for some of the club’s most subversive nights with past guests including Neil Landstrumm, Boris Noiz, DJ Scotch Bonnet and Karsten Pflumm. Skank co-founder Swarm Intelligence has consistently destroyed the city’s dance-floors since moving to Berlin 3 years ago. Performing around Europe, from Malaga to Berlin, Swarm’s diversity never fails to surprise, delivering a mega-mash of hard-hitting energy, with big support from the likes of Surgeon, Stormfield, Blackmass Plastics, Boris Noiz and DVNT. With a level of production that is going to hit the clubs quick, this one’s not to be missed. Dublin Komrade and fellow futurist Rory St John, ulterior dancefloor and slantyfloor music enthusiast, Rory has presented his sound and livesets across Europe; from the mecca U-Club Bratislava to Tresor, Berlin.
And if all this wasn't enough, we've also got Herr Schneider in the cage. Tresor resident and Robot Army lynch pin. With exemplary precision mixing and an original style of funked up and functional machine music. Schneider brings it, every time.
