Before becoming a mainstay of the influential NYC Nu-Disco Label DFA, John Maclean was a member of Sub Pop’s Six Finger Satellite. Switching gears between grunge to post-punk and Krautrock they lasted for a few years before calling it quits.
Legend has it that John then moved to New Hampshire to pursue teaching English. Meanwhile, his good friends James Murphy and Tim Goldsworthy set up shop in New York and began assembling their new label named after James’ PA system ‘Death From Above.’
When Murphy begged Mr. Maclean to make a move back into music, he couldn’t resist and thus became The Juan Maclean. Armed with an arsenal of disco gear and killer vocals from Nancy Whang he soon wrote such hits as “Happy House” and “Feel So Good,” not to mention remixes for Air, Chromeo, and Chicken Lips
An up-and-coming blog on the NYC circuit, Brooklyn Bass is quickly making their rounds within the electronic scene. Hosting a monthly after-hours residency at The Cameo Gallery, you can find DJs Judge Wise, T'Angelo and Evan Michael hosting the most current local artists such as Anthony Naples and Cut Mistake Music.
All three of these young editors take their time to carefully curate their blog with the latest reviews of international dance tracks and nearby happenings. Be on the look out for their monthly podcasts and weekly event listings as well. In a live context, expect these dudes to hold no bars. T'Angelo and Judge Wise throw down shaking Bass music and Deep House, While Evan Michael stirs it up with House and Disco classics.
