Square One presents: Nasty FM with Marcus Nasty, Scratcha DVA, Royal T, Funkystepz

  • Square One returns to Wire September 26th with a showcase from Nasty FM, the radio station founded by Marcus Nasty. Joining him will be Hyperdub's Scratcha DVA and Funkystepz, Butterz boy Royal T, Sir Spyro, Mak 10, Shy One and Joss Ryan from DVA Music, The Whiteboys and resident Jo Kira, hosted by Descry. Expect everything from house, UK funky, grime dubstep and garage from such a talented lineup. ___ MARCUS NASTY (Nasty FM / Rinse / Urban Nerds) The original and founding member of grime's notorious N.A.S.T.Y crew, Marcus Nasty's importance to the UK underground is huge. Always on trend, Marcus went on to be one of the key DJs to push UK Funky, primarily via his regular Rinse FM show but also at clubs and festivals across the globe. His most recent project, Nasty FM, boasts an impressive roster of artists and it is a pleasure to be able to bring some of those associated with it up to Leeds, into the intimate surroundings of Wire. SCRATCHA DVA (Hyperdub / Rinse FM) A key part of the make up of Kode9's revered Hyperdub imprint, Scratcha DVA has gone from releasing killer twelves, such as Natty / Ganja, to an astonishingly impressivle, full length album in the space of only a few years. Whether he is making grime instrumentals or UK house twizzlers, every production is spot on. Having moved from hosting the breakfast show to the Hyperdub show on Rinse, Leon's vibrant and energetic personality shine through in his tunes. ROYAL T (Butterz / Rinse FM) The words grime and Butterz have been inseparable for at least a couple of years now and Royal T has been one of the producers at the very heart of this revival. Hailing from the perhaps slightly less grimey Southampton, Mark Taylor has muscled into the underground very quickly with releases on Rinse and Butterz as well as remixes for Zinc and Terror Danjah. Having already earned himself a weekly Rinse FM slot, it would seem Royal T is still only just getting started. FUNKYSTEPZ (Hyperdub) Hailing from the Hyperdub camp, the Funkystepz trio of Renay, Stimpy and Maxsin span the range of UK Funky. They have produced smooth vocal jams such as ‘For U’ with Lily McKenzie as well as club weapons such as ‘Fuller’. DJ Maxsin was also party of N.A.S.T.Y crew for a time so has his roots firmly in grime. He gives credit to Marcus Nasty for introducing him to house music so it seems only right that he represents at this showcase. SIR SPYRO (Night Slugs / Rinse FM) By now you won’t be able to find many top MCs who Spyro hasn’t spun records for, having built up his reputation from a very early age. His technical ability and upfront selection always force the crowd into reaching for the reload. Most recently his refix of Bok Bok’s grime throwback ‘Silo Pass’ has been doing some serious damage so expect more of the same on the night. MAK 10 (Nasty FM) Often playing b2b with Sir Spyro, Mak 10’s roots run just as deep. His links with N.A.S.T.Y crew go back a long way and his expert blends of grime, funky and dubstep will set the tone just right. DVA MUSIC – SHY ONE & JOSS RYAN Following the release of the Decaffeinated Love EP and the Melancholy Dreams EP respectively, Shy One and Joss Ryan form a key part of Scratcha DVA’s label. With a steadily increasing interest in their music, catch them playing their Leeds debuts. THE WHITEBOYS (Nasty FM) One of the most recent additions to the Nasty FM roster and traveling over from Huddersfield, The Whiteboys are an exciting up and coming duo. With numerous original productions and remixes already under their belt and support from BBC Radio 1xtra they are set for further success.
