We’re officially excited and we’ve got a lot to tell you about!
Thunder starts 2013 not just in a brand, spanking new venue, but with a true Chicago house legend and Music Box DJ, Gene Hunt , who is flying in from the windy city just for the occasion.
Gene should need little introduction, as he is walking, talking, jacking Chicago house history. He grew up listening to the Hot Mix 5 on WBMX and attending Lil Louis’ infamous high school parties at the Bismark Hotel, where he caught the house music bug that led to him starting to make his own tracks and taking up DJing at local parties, before Steve Poindexter, who was running Gucci promotions with Ron Hardy, gave him his big break and booked him to play one of their parties. His DJ partner that night was Ron Hardy himself, who was so impressed by the 15 year old Gene’s performance, that he took the young man under his wing and schooled him in the art playing house Music Box style.
Gene went on to support Ron DJing at the Music Box, as well as playing at the Bismark Hotel and with DJs like Lil Louis, Frankie Knuckles, Steve Poindexter , Boo Williams, DJ Pierre, in fact, you name a Chicago DJ, he played with them.
And all this time, Gene was making music too, from the first tracks he recorded in his friend Larry Heard’s living room, to his first record which was released was on Trax sub-label, Housetime and went on to become an acid house classic, to co-producing Phuture’s seminal ‘Slam ‘ and ‘Spank Spank’ with DJ Pierre, to releasing on Djax Up Beats and Dust Traxx, to collaborating with Robert Owens, Paul Johnson, Farley Jackmaster Funk, Frankie Knuckles, and, of course, Ron Hardy.
But Gene is not a museum piece, he started young and was cementing his place in the Chicago house aristocracy whilst most kids his age were doing their school homework, so he is still active DJ both in his home town and abroad, as well as putting out fantastic records on contemporary labels such as HotMix, Our House Is Your Rush and Rush Hour, for whom he recently compiled two compilations of unreleased Chicago house gems, taken from his personal archive of reel to reel tapes from those wild west days of the original Chicago house scene.
This is also the first time Gene has played in London for more than 10 years - did I mention us being excited?!
If that wasn’t enough, Thunder starts the new year in a new venue too. Still in a basement, but now in the heart of Dalston, our new home is the Dance Tunnel, a purpose built club space, with slightly more room so we hopefully won’t have any problems getting you all in this time, a cloakroom and most importantly, a massive, kicking, crystal clear new sound system! We genuinely think it’s one of the best small club spaces London.
Support will be provided, as ever, by Thunder residents Miles Simpson, Joseph Apted and Rick Hopkins.
Advance tickets will be available only via Ransom Note.
There will be a limited amount of early birds at £6, advance tickets will then be £7 and more on the door.
The venue is bigger but not by much, so please remember every party we did in 2012 sold out and were full to capacity, leaving people we wanted to party with us outside and disappointed.
