Basic Soul Unit 'Motional Response' Album Release Party

  • Lab.our Union & Still Music presents BASIC SOUL UNIT MOTIONAL RESPONSE ALBUM RELEASE PARTY VISUALS: WIFIHIFISCIFI This is more a personal invite than a party promo. After almost 10 years of producing eps for various labels as Basic Soul Unit, I'm proud to present my first long player being released on Still Music (Chicago). To celebrate this, we (Jason Ulrich and I) at Lab.our Union have put together an all-star local (but internationally renowned) line up with both live acts and DJs. One look at the line up should tell you that it will be an evening of forward thinking music with groove regardless of genre. I really hope you can come share this moment with us in my hometown and at my favourite stomping ground The Rivoli backroom. BASIC SOUL UNIT (Still/Nonplus+/Lab.our Union) 10 years is a long trajectory, but it does finally feel like I've arrived somewhere. After the good fortune of releasing music on some of my favourite labels like Versatile, Mathematics, Ostgut Ton, Dolly, Creme Organization, Philpot, New Kanada & Nonplus+ over the years, I finally got myself together to put out an album. Alway at a loss to describe my sound, I guess I would call it deep house and techno with soul and a touch of rawness. Regardless of the reviews (and so far they've been great!), its a project that I'm proud of and feel it represents my "soul" in an honest fashion. SACHA WILLIAMSON on vocals (4lux/Fresh Minute) She's performed at some of Toronto's favourite jazz rooms or concert stages (not to mention performing on CBC), but the ever talented songstress is not afraid to get into a dark sweaty club either. She can sound sweet and smooth like on local producer Gene King's ep off the legendary Shelter label from NYC, or straight up funky like her performance on Altered Natives' "Believe in Me" and astract & deep as evidenced by her collaborations with UK don IG Culture. Sacha's voice features on "Breathe" from the Motional Response album. PURSUIT GROOVES (Tectonic/Deepblak) A recent transplant to Toronto, Brooklyn's Vanese Smith better known Pursuit Grooves made her mark after her tracks were heard through influential Bristol label Tectonic as well as part of Gilles Peterson's Brownswood Bubblers series. Her sound is ever evolving and her approach always fresh whether laying down a head nodding groove, beating out a stomping club track or getting busy with some noise samples. Did we mention that she's also masquerading as Wifihifiscifi to do the visuals at the party? KEVIN MCPHEE (3024) A talented upstart doing things on his own terms (check his RA podcast). Kevin has not exactly been keeping a low profile with releases on labels like Naked Lunch, Hype_LTD, Idle Hands, WNCL and a storming remix for Sepalcure on Hotflush. This is set to continue with a track on the upcoming 3024 ep (run by Martyn) featuring an all-Toronto cast. Kevin's work has traversed dubby and ethereal fancy beatwork, or melodic house grooves to hard crunching techno. All of this with his left of center sense of groove and rhythm. JASON ULRICH (Lab.our Union) Jason has been long been a fixture in the Toronto house and techno scene as a DJ. Besides that, he's well known as a crazy Disco and Boogie collector/selector too. Jason has played and supported events alongside such luminaries as Theo Parrish, Mike Huckaby & Francois K to name a few. Together with Stuart, they started Lab.our Union as an outlet for their creative endeavours in music and design. Watch this space for more. STILL MUSIC Chicago Run by Jerome Derradji from Chicago, Still Music is a label with an open ear on all things soulful. It has released gems such as a compilation of deep Detroit producers, a compilation of jacking Chicago classics, another compilation of lost disco grooves, future soul from Paul Randolph (Jazzanova's go to vocalist), to true Afrobeat bizniz from Seun Kuti. A natural fit for the release of Motional Response.
