Tales of experience. Tales of joy. Tales of love lost and won. A Tale of Us. Tale of Us are Berlin-based DJ and production partnership Karm and Matteo who are currently re-writing the rulebook for deeply moving, emotional electronic music. Together they share a sonic vision that pulls together elements of house and techno with influences from pop, nu-disco and even rock music. While all of their productions are instantly recognisable as Tale Of Us, these range from straight-up dance floor jams to low-slung ambient tracks and more abstract compositions. Already regular fixtures at clubs like Watergate and Weekend in Berlin, Tenax in Florence, Barraca In Valencia and DC10 in Ibiza they have grown up throwing secret loft parties called ‘Just This’, in their hometown of Milan. While both originally hail from North America, Karm was born in Toronto and Matteo in New York, they moved to Italy as children, which is where they met and formed the close working bond that they now share. At present they are based in Berlin, an inspirational frontier, which has given them numerous opportunities to build relationships with fellow musicians who share their unique musical outlook. At the forefront of these like-minded visionaries are Seth Troxler, Shaun Reeves, Ryan Crosson and Lee Curtiss, who have been passionate supporters of Tale of Us since they first heard their music; so much so that they have recently released Tale Of Us’ debut EP release on their new ‘Visionquest’ label this spring. Prior to this, Karm and Matteo had already released tracks on labels such as 'Barraca Music' and 'Life & Death' and had put out various remix collaborations with fellow 'Visionquest' label mates Shaun Reeves & Ryan Crosson. In particular the Tale Of Us remix of Thugfucker ‘Disco Gnome’ on 'Life and Death' was hailed by Mixmag as one best records of 2010. Building on the success of ‘Disco Gnomes’ they have recently released their next killer remix, this time of a track called ‘Every Minute Alone’ by Danish band WhoMadeWho, which was made techno ‘Tune Of The Month’ in not only Mixmag but also DJ Mag, and has been charted by DJs from one end of dance music to the other. Following on from their show-stealing performance at the Visionquest Showcase at the Shelborne in Miami during Ultra Week this year, later this summer we will see them perform both live & DJ sets at locations around the world including the Detroit Movement Festival (DEMF) and Sonar in Barcelona. They are also booked to play at Klubber's Day in Madrid, Fiesta Privada in Rome, Elita Festival in Milan and many other quality venues throughout Europe. -Thugfucker: Former international aid worker teams up with Icelandic security specialist and former top model to create an international DJ supergroup. Certainly not what you'd expect from a group called Thugfucker - but then Greg Oreck and Holmar Filipsson often do tend to defy expectations. One a New Yorker transplanted to Europe, the other an Icelander transplanted to New York. Both from a strong musical background with an almost obsessive dedication to the art of wild party instigation. Growing up on an Icelandic commune full of some of the country's finest political thinkers, Holmar eschewed his past and all the heady philosophy of his childhood to move to New York and search out more physical and visceral methods of bringing happiness to the masses. Meanwhile Greg was in the midst of a successful (if short-lived) political career in America when he too became disillusioned with the duplicity and self serving interest of those around him. Disturbed by the void he saw in most people's lives, it was in the dark depths of the New York underground club scene that he finally found his true calling. Unbeknownst to each other, Holmar and Greg then propelled themselves along similar paths, throwing parties, honing their musical & studio skills and searching out inspiration from a wide variety of musical sources. Then one late night, in a cloudy alcohol fueled discussion about the plight of the genetically Rhythm-Blind, Holmar and Greg recognized the depth of their shared passions. Thugfucker was born. -Pillowtalk: PillowTalk is Sammy D, Ryan Williams and Michael Tello. Based out of the famous Lower Haight District in San Francisco, PillowTalk's music fuses classic R&B, boogie and disco with underground house and techno with an original feel. With releases out on Visionquest, Life & Death and Wolf + Lamb, 2012 is shaping up to be a huge year as they hit the road with the live band. It all started when they found themselves up late, gathered around the baby grand piano in Ryan's kitchen. Tello would be strumming on guitar and Sammy would be fiddling around on the Wurlitzer. It all just came together organically without knowing it, melodies would form, songs would appear and before anyone realised, Sammy would be singing some off-hand hook and, hey presto, you had what Arthur Russell would call; first thought, best thought compositions. Soon, these impromptu and improvised jam sessions were recorded on iPhone apps before being taken to the lab (a space about two blocks away) and from there they were transformed into alluring, charming, dance-pop songs. With experience of, and backgrounds in, so many genres, Pillow Talk are making some seriously inspiring and beautifully original music. If youre trying to pin down their exact sound you may have to refer to their motto of D.A.G (destroy all genres - a term borrowed from a famed underground San Fran DJ). With influences ranging from the Beach Boys to Sam Cooke, from Freddie Hubbard to Harry Nilsson, and from Larry Heard to Theo Parrish, you can tell these guys are ruled from the right side of their brains. Having just started composing, this trio are still finding their own true groove, with their full potential yet to be explored A delightful debut single (Love Makes Parks on the revered Visionquest imprint) is soon to be followed by a beautiful full length on Life and Death, before following that up with another finely crafted EP for NYC house darlings, Wolf + Lamb. As well as that, a live show is in the works, soon to be debuted later this year. We look forward to following this fresh and exciting new sound and realize some of your deepest secrets are revealed Pillow Talking, so we are just lucky to listen in. -Tennis: DJ Tennis is Manfredi Romano. Born in the 70's and raised between New Jersey, Sicily, and Parma in a family where music was such a small thing. He had no relatives that played musical instruments, nothing to play on at home, and no one giving music any considerable amount of love. Despite this, his creative and artistic attitude have always centered on music - singing, playing and collecting weird and noisy musical instruments at every turn. In 1988, before starting computer science studies at Pisa University (to please his grandfather) he was already playing and singing in college bands and had an indie rock radio show on a local radio station in Palermo. Recording bands, organizing parties, and DJ'ing at the tennis club where he used to play as a semi-pro player (the Tennis moniker comes from his passion for that sport) all became his way to support the costs of his studies. But when he graduated he never imagined he would turn that hobby into his career. Still he became a DJ, while focusing first on promoting new underground music in his country. Manfredi is responsible for founding and developing some of the most important Italian underground musical events such as the Elita Festival in Milan, the Dissonanze Festival in Rome, and creating new marketing concepts around Italian clubbing. During the last 2 decades Manfredi started producing music for theatre, movie soundtracks, and TV commercials. His production skills are eternally inspired from the psychedelic, dark, and melancholic sounds of the 60s, straight through to early 2000s IDM. A few of Manfredis influences include: Beach Boys, The Who, Talk Talk, Ultravox, XTC, Fugazi, June of 44, Suicide, Radiohead, Godspeed You Black Emperor!, Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, and Plastikman. In 2010, tired of the output of the current musical scene he collected all of his musical works and, with Thugfuckers Greg Oreck, started a new techno and pop label called Life and Death. The name of the label has a specific meaning, inspired by the Socratic maieutic process to give subtle and dead elements a new life as well as referring to the benefit and hypnotic power of music used in the mesmeric processes for brain therapy. Tennis is based in Berlin where he also shares label experience and a studio with the innovative deep electronic duo Tale of Us. He has worked hard to create a crew of young and inspired musicians like Clockwork and Esperanza, among others. -Jimmy Edgar: After a two-year break, Detroit producer and wayward star-child Jimmy Edgar debuts on Scuba's Hotflush Recordings armed with an album full of futuristic sleaze. Known for his unique take on jacking house and electro funk, he's recently been splitting his time between the US and Berlin, exploring transcendental meditation and the boundaries of the nonphysical. This offering is an extension of that journey, bringing eleven tracks of erotic robopop to the table. Titled Majenta, this LP is a departure from his past sound, marking a shift in his own ever-expanding consciousness, as well as another exciting chapter of his musical career. Each track is an aural manifesto, giving well-deserved nods to his varied musical influences. Close encounters with Detroit legends Derrick May and Juan Atkins, Jimmy's 2004 signing to Warp Records, and his early exposure to Kraftwerk have all acted as lynchpins in the cultivation of his sound. With a number of releases on Glasstable, Semantica, Nonplus and long player releases on both Warp and !K7, Majenta reflects Jimmy's evolution as both artist and child of the cosmos.
