Anything is Possible with Mix Mup, m50, Lubin

  • Mix Mup Leipzig's Mix Mup is making his Chicago debut, fresh off of a KM + MM set at Goethe-Institut Brüssel with Anthony Shakir. Best known recently for these collaborations with Kassem Mosse, he's also been a top-notch DJ and solo artist in his own right for over a decade, with a string of 12"s starting back in 2002. Between tour dates at Hamburg's legendary Golden Pudel Club, Zentral Cafe Nurnberg, the Plattenbau series in Uppsala, Sweden, the recently defunct Horst Kreutzberg and regular appearances at About Blank in Berlin, he's also put out a killer 12" on Mikrodisko, which might be familiar as the opening track on Ben UFO's recent Fabric CD. Mix Mup (or MMUP, or MM, or Kid Mup...) has a style all his own, balancing a love of German techno aesthetics with exuberant rave energy and a cheeky sense of humour. m50 m50 is a bit of a cult hero in underground music circles, having played tastemaking sets from Tokyo to London, focusing on intimate spaces and open-minded dancefloors. As the host of WNUR's long running etc-radio program, he explores cutting-edge productions alongside dance music's Detroit and Chicago roots. In the club, he plays intoxicatingly whimsical combinations of jacking techno, bass music, and deep house. Described by 5 Magazine as "pulsing, adventurous electronic music, of moody lows and exhilarating sounds burned into the ether," and by Timeout New York as "a spiraling slice of house, techno and acid, with a few left-field twists and turns," his DJ sets have featured alongside performers ranging from Deetron to Francois K to Dandy Jack. Lubin Zachary Lubin is a dynamo behind the decks, having cut his teeth in the mid-90s with kinetic 3-turntable sets all over the midwest and across Europe. Inspired by the poise and recklessness of Jeff Mills' legendary turntablism, his mixtapes and radio sessions as "Mumtaz" have endeared him to Chicago heads through the years. Meanwhile, he's developed a distinctive sound in his productions, involving intense polyrhythmic elements immersed in glimmers of atmosphere. After recording a Controllability for Mills' Axis sublabel 6277 in 2005, Lubin took a hiatus from music; he has marked his musical reappearance with last year's Threshold 12" on Kimochi Sound. This will the first club set of his much anticipated return, his DJ sets are resolutely aimed at the dancefloor and this will be no exception. Protman Joe Hahn's Protman project is an energetic (and sometimes bizarre) composite of all manner of electro, lo-fi videogame sound effects, analog synthesizers, and club music. Recording since the 1990s and a founding member of the K-Rad collective, he continues to be a prolific solo artist, having released 5 full-length albums since 2007. Protman experiments with alternative input devices, you're more likely to see him performing live with a vintage Nintendo controller than a standard midi keyboard. He manages the international 'Iron Chef of Music' events, in which competitors produce entire tracks based on a single surprise sample. He is a noted circuit-bending artist, which means that he forces machines to make sounds beyond their original design. All of this translates into a unique, unpredictable live set with heavy beats, squelchy bass, and irresistible personality. Lokua Lokua is a dedicated and passionate music producer and live PA artist with recent releases on CPKAY RCRDS and Don't Trust Humans. Those unaware of Lokua's talent in the visual arts will be pleasantly surprised by his contribution to the event. He'll be putting Primary's 30-foot LED screen through its paces, weaving vector-based motion graphics of his design into original textures, polymorphic shapes and vibrant color. His work has most recently been featured on the international broadcasts at RTS FM and as part of the Heartbeats event series.
