Lowbrow '1st Birthday

  • ==================================================== Lowbrow ‘1st Birthday’ Easter Thursday 28th March 10pm -6am The Garage, Cross York Street £10/£12/MOTD ===================================================== Well what a first year it has been and we want to thank all of you that have danced, drank and partied to the very wee hours of the morning with us. Without you we wouldn’t have made it to this first mile stone and hopefully you will be there with us for many more. On Easter Thursday we bring you three headliners who we feel encapsulate the sound of Lowbrow perfectly and couldn’t be more fitting for a birthday, rolling the sound all the way from cosmo-naught disco through to low light Berlin techno and back again. So firstly blowing the candles out, we bring you two of the most sought after residents from the home of Berlin’s most famous clubbing imprint Panorama Bar and also label mainstays of Ostgut Ton. One of these has yet to grace the 1971 Red Chevy at The Garage in the form of label head honcho Nick Höppner and another provided us with possibly one of the most stand-out sets of the year and we couldn’t wait to have her back; Virginia. To round off the sound for the evening we could think of no-one better to take control of Waxwerk’s for the evening other than Ali Herron aka OOFT, Ali is well known for throwing round some of most ground breaking disco edits and deep cuts like no one’s business, so we really do have something for everybody. ====================================================== Lineup Nick Höppner (Panorama Bar/Ostgut Ton) Virginia (Panorama Bar/Ostgut Ton) Ste Roberts (Hypercolour) Christian Maiden (Leftroom) OOFT (Instruments of Rapture / Dellusions of Grandeur) Matt Long (Mono_cult/Fina Records) Disco Vader (The Garage) Ticket Links: Facebook Event: Year to date! There have been some hugely stand out memories along the way to our first birthday (and with many more to come might we add!) so we thought lets have a little reminisce. Many people still talk about when a certain Mr ‘Tom Demac’ started to MC to the crowd whilst we hosted the waterfront festival in the pouring rain and actually through his pirate radio engaged lyricism managed to bring the sun back out for the remainder of the late afternoon, much to the delight of the sodden crowd. We had Axel Boman play for us early this year and he loved it that much he signed up for a residency, you vary rarely get that love shown to you by such a globally respected artist in such early days of an event but we did because of you lot so we couldn’t thank you any more for that! Finally but definitely not least (as we could be writing here all day) is when we had Virginia come play and half way through her set stood on the back of DJ booth to a sea of camera phones then proceeded to sing her and Steffi’s timeless anthem ‘Yours’ this really was a spine tingling moment that you very rarely get to experience in a small intimate club but that night we did!! All though we do have plenty of highlights we could carry on dwelling all day but the main highlight we need to mention are all the guests we have had the opportunity to have play for us in our first year and it’s a pretty impressive list, every single one of them really has bought something unique to each event. So thanks you’s so far go to Prosumer, Steffi, Kris Wadsworth, Virginia, Axel Boman, Tom Demac, Bareskin, Braiden, Deadboy, Shenoda, Alex Jones, Youandewan, Gene Hunt, DJ Deep, Cottam, Last Magpie, Cedric Maison and T.Williams. ====================================================== Artist Biographies Nick Höppner: Be it through his monthly residencies at the inimitable Berghain/Panoramabar, his solo releases for Ostgut Ton, his expansive DJ touring, or indeed his creative involvement and management of the Ostgut label since its inception, Nick stands out as a unique, long-serving and truly dedicated figure in today's electronic music world. As a producer and DJ, Höppner displays all the characteristics of a life-long music lover. Sensitive to the history, emotions, stories and situations that derive from this music, for Nick the scope and eclecticism available within the 4/4 rhythm allows him great freedom to express his tastes and musical instincts. Throughout his four solo 12''s on Ostgut Ton, we find lush, uplifting house, deeply melodic techno dub sessions, spooky percussive workouts, and lashings of richly produced musical statements, always ably avoiding musical pigeonholes As a remixer too, Nick's passion for storytelling comes through with great enthusiasm, as his interpretations of Richard Davis on Was Not Was, Ed Davenport on Liebe*Detail or Airhead on Brainmath have all shown. To immerse one's self within Nick's typically extended DJ sets rewards similar multi-faceted discoveries. Always telling a tale, weaving an exciting path across his chosen musical spectrum - whether its a tough, raw and energetic house-party set, a dramatic big-room techno adventure, or anything in between - Nick's mature, confident approach and depth of character sets him apart from his contemporaries behind the decks. His open minded love and knowledge of music, along with a professional background working as editor for the important Groove magazine, that led to his current position as manager for Berghain/Panoramabar's in-house label, Ostgut Ton. Since the label's birth in 2005 Nick has played a defining role in its growing success, spreading the club's musical message through the productions of its residents, and selflessly working to push the platform forward, nurturing its growth. Virginia: The talented DJ, Singer, Songwriter and Producer, Virginia has been deeply involved in electronic music for over a decade. Growing up in Munich, the energetic and dedicated artist quickly found her feet in music. Her career kick-started in the late 90s thanks to a wave of early hit singles, and she soon began to tour as a DJ, discovering a real passion for life in front of the crowd. A world-wind of live shows and international Djing ensued, with Virginia finding many a follower, thanks to residencies like the cult club Flokati, Tobi Neumann's famous house heaven, or her longstanding nights at Sven Väth´s Cocoon club in Frankfurt, which ran for over 3 years. Inspired by the warm and analog tracks of the 80s and 90s, her DJ sets combine this sound with modern records in an exciting fusion, layered with spontaneous live vocals adding a unique third dimension. With a careful mixture of peaks and also moments of reduction, she commands attention in her hybrid DJ / Live performances. Viriginia co-wrote a wealth of productions and guest appearances, alongside the likes of Steve Bug, Butch, Abe Duque and most recently with Panorama Bar resident Steffi, on her album 'Yours & Mine'. Beginning with a vocal-led collaboration, 'Reasons', on Jus Ed's acclaimed label Underground Quality in Oct 2010, they have since gone on to produce some very exciting results. Steffi's album focuses two tracks around Virginia's vocals which she feels really reflect her true musical direction - the tracks 'Yours', a rousing hit in the making, and the touching 'You Own My Mind' (both released on Berlin's Ostgut Ton in Feb 2011). OOFT: The main force behind OOFT Music is Ali Herron. Originally cutting his production chops with tracky edits and some early OOFT! remixes alongside The Revenge, Ali has been steadily building up his own studio over the last 5 years, putting out a series of deep, pitched- down house tracks on labels such as Instruments of Rapture, PPF, Delusions of Grandeur, Rememory and Wolf Music. DJ-wise he has played in most of the clubs that matter in Scotland, including The Sub Club, The Arches, Glasgow School of Art, Stereo, Snafu, and The Reading Rooms amongst many others. Recent European trips have seen him take his sound across Germany, Poland, Finland, France and Spain. Originally running the L.E.S.S. Productions imprint alongside The Revenge and DJ 2Three, Ali’s main creative outlet is currently his own Foto Recordings label which also showcases material from colleagues such as Andy Ash, Deep Space Orchestra and Craig Bratley.
