Louche with Zip, Portable & Delroy Edwards

  • April 2013 brings three top class acts that we simply can't wait to get on Mint Club's turntables; Zip, Portable (live) and Delroy Edwards. It's been exactly two years since Zip last played for us in Mint Club. Real name Thomas Franzmann, he co-owns and curates the wonderful Perlon Records, one of the most distinguished labels going. Releasing since 97, Perlon's intellectual twist on electronic music has seen artists such as Akufen, Cassy and even Ricardo release on the ground breaking label. Their refusal to bend to the digital format in favour of vinyl has seen them gain respect from all corners of the globe. Thomas selectively gigs at only the worlds finest venues, holding exclusive residencies at Panorama Bar and Harry Klein. His recent Fabric 67 mix CD was received to critical acclaim, and he's widely regarded as one of the best, and most humble DJ's in the business by his peers. Keeping things in the Perlon camp we welcome label artist Portable, an alias of the supremely talented Alan Abrahams, with whom you might also be familiar with by his other moniker Bodycode. Growing up in South Africa, the continent's trademark rhythms influence a large part of his deep atmospheric sound, coupled with the Chicago and Detroit influences that made him eventually leave his native land for London in 1997. His skin tingling live set is truly mesmerising, a hypnotic blend of afro-rhythms, haunting melodies and Alan's own soulful vocals. His was the best live show we saw in 2012, and this booking was made shortly afterwards! Check his Live at Robert Johnson EP from last year, or his back catalogue on Perlon or Sud Electronic to see just how good this guy is. Long Island Electrical Systems, or L.I.E.S is probably our pick for the most consistent label of the last 12 months so it is with great pleasure that we introduce you to one of the main stays in the L.I.E.S camp, Delroy Edwards. A native of Los Angeles Delroy moved to New York when he was 18, and soon after met L.I.E.S boss Ron Morelli. His debut on the label came last year, with the massive 4 CLub Use Only EP, and was followed up by another heater, Heart and Soul, 2 records that rarely leave our boxes. He's a top drawer DJ too boot, so we fully expect some fireworks for his Leeds debut.
