microMONO 15: Oneohtrix Point Never, Scraps

  • Oneohtrix Point Never is the recording name of Brooklyn's Daniel Lopatin. His music is composed and performed primarily on vintage low-fi synthesisers, and has been described as 'drone', 'ambient', 'trippy, arpeggio-heavy psychedelia', and 'a cracked mirror refracting the sounds of the past'. In the span of several short years, Lopatin has shown himself to be one of experimental music's most fascinating figures, moving from the synth-laden tangerine dreams of his earlier work to the contemplative harshness of his 2010 album Returnal. Last year's sample-based album Replica has been called 'a true modern masterpiece in noise music' that veers from placid ambient interludes to quietly chaotic constellations of found sound'. If such accolades are insufficient, this month's Wire has Lopatin on its cover. Oneohtrix Point Never plays at the IMA on Monday 18 March at 7pm in microMONO15, supported by Scraps—Brisbane's Laura Hill—with her dreamy pop haze of drifting keyboard-driven pulse. It is a joint project with Room 40, and, as always, admission is free. No bookings: first in, best dressed.
