After months of arranging, it gives us enormous pleasure to announce the Scottish debut of one of our most exciting musical discoveries in recent years, Shangaan Electro.
Shangaan Electro is the street dance phenomenon from South Africa that has become a global phenomenon on the back of a series of viral youtube films, an acclaimed compilation on Damon Albarn's Honest Jon’s label, and a remix series featuring some of the world's most renowned electronic music producers.
The creation of charismatic producer/mastermind and vocalist Nozinja, Shangaan Electro is a very contemporary product of Africa, juxtaposing the traditional chants and vocal harmonies of the Shangaan tribe with high-octane electronic backing tracks. This is hyper-kinetic digital dance music custom made for weekly dance-offs in Soweto which can reach dizzying speeds of up to 188 beats per minute.

This first ever UK tour will comprise a workshop and performance in each city. Based on a Soweto street party, the live show features mainman Nozinja, the clown-masked Tshetsha Boys, alongside vocalists Tiyiselani, Nkata Mawewe and the fastest Shangaan dancers around. Dance workshops will give audiences of all ages the chance to learn and practice Shangaan dance moves before trying them out in public.
The emphasis of the tour will be on participation and inclusivity, capitalising on the inherently accessible appeal of Shangaan street dance, with its animated beats, day-glo costumes and larger-than-life performers. The intention is to break down barriers between performers and audience, as this is how the music is presented in South Africa.
Shangaan Electro has travelled the world, performing scene-stealing turns at Sydney Festival, Roskilde, London's Blaze Festival and as part of Damon Albarn's Honest Jon's Chop Up. Caribou's Jiaolong label is releasing a a 12” series throughout 2013.
Suitable support will come from Glasgow's Auntie Flo whose debut Future Rhythm Machine album has just been nominated for the Scottish Album of The Year.
