Last Too Much Ever with Loefah & Chunky

  • DJ SHY AND CLOUDS!!!!! Yeah!!! Those were the words uttered by Dan Fooishbar and Pete Same O over way too many beers back at sunny Workshop Bar in 2008, when discussing the new Dubstep night they were planning to bring to Melbourne. Thankfully this particular Too Much party never eventuated, as the show most undoubtedly would have failed! Instead, better choices were made, and now after 49 months, 24 shows, 46 artists, 2 hosts, 2 VJs, 4 designers, 4 venues, 0000s upon 000s of posters, and 1 car crash (their fault not ours) it is time to say goodbye… When Dan and Pete started Too Much they both played deep, dark dubstep, (with the occasional Saxon-Jam double drop thrown in for good measure), and as the music changed so did the night. It moved and evolved through Dubstep, Garage, Hip Hop, Techno and House. We had many other changes over the years including Fooishbar leaving for London and David Bass and Naise joining the family, along with our favourite DJs Woz and Tony Black joining and supporting us over many parties. There have been countless-upon-countless friends and acquaintances that have supported us over the years which we sincerely thank. There are way too many to personally name but you have been an incredible part of making all of this happen. But a very special thanks does go out to our closest friends and special Too Much supporters – you have been more than amazing over the years, and because of you we now have some of the best memories of our lives (sorry for the cheese, but it had to be said!!) <3 <3 It’s been an amazing time, so it really is with rather mixed emotions that we pull the plug on Too Much… but we would rather go out on a high like Seinfeld, rather than not, like the Simpsons... When we were offered LOEFAH and CHUNKY from our mates in Sydney (who also sold us our first international guest), we figured that it was the perfect way to end it. Our journey through music over the years has mirrored Loefah’s, and he has been a massive influence to where we are now. For our last show we are going back to our spiritual home THE MERCAT, where we’ll have minimal lighting, a big smoke machine and a loud system, with a sweaty, packed and vibing LAST PARTY with people loosing it to the music we love. What else do you need?! We really hope you can party one more time with us! Lots of love Same O, Fooishbar, David Bass and Naise **** LOEFAH ***** The seminal work of producer pioneer, Loefah has been formative in the creation and development of the now worldwide scene of dubstep. Along with his partners, Mala and Coki, he started and continues to run the now infamous DMZ brand. His own production was initially well known for his much respected bass weight and half time beat pattern, well illustrated by his productions such as ‘Horror Show’, ‘Mud’ and ‘Ruffage’. Though still part and parcel of DMZ, in 2009, he started his own label called Swamp81 which better reflected his developing direction in underground music. As "dubstep" grew further and further from its roots and became increasingly commercial, Loefah turned his attention to an emergent new hive of creativity to create the home label, Swamp 81. With a steady stream of output from the likes of Kryptic Minds, Skream, Pinch, Ramadanman, Addison Groove, Instra:mental, Boddika and FaultyDL, it became increasingly clear that Swamp81 is dedicated to the promotion of subcultural bass music rather than dubstep music per se. The releases display a like-minded dedication to weighty electronic music and that is what has made the ripples world wide for this label, winner of the best new label in at the dubstep awards 2010. Reflecting the eclecticism, Swamp81 releases are being supported by a variation of DJs such as Atrak, Josh Wink, Joy Orbison, Ricardo Villalobos, Giles Peterson, Kode9, Benji B, and many more. Whilst Loefah continues to tour vicariously through clubland, his music increasingly progresses into new territory, pushing the sound of Swamp81 and the UK’s underground scene in general. **** CHUNKY **** Chunky is a proud Mancunian with roots in Zimbabwe (having relocated from there as a child) which may explain such a worldly, open-minded, outlook on life. Onstage, this translates into a rare ability to work any crowd into a frenzy, whilst handling everything from the latest, bass-heavy cuts to live jazz with consummate ease. In the musical metropolis that is Manchester, Chunky has long been the hardest working MC on the circuit. Performing alongside the many itinerant ‘A-Listers’ passing through the city each week soon brought him to the attention of TRUE TIGER, LOEFAH, PEARSON SOUND and many more. Since then, Chunky’s stomping grounds have been ever-expanding and he is now resident MC for SWAMP81, and HESSLE AUDIO, a side of which has made him one of FABRIC’s most frequent performers. Chunky’s recent work alongside the SWAMP81 head honcho has resulted in gigs across Europe and a monthly RINSE FM radio show. His own segment, “STRAIGHT OUTTA SWAMPTON”, where he would showcase classic records during the last 15 minutes, has proved such a hit that it’s been given a monthly 2-hour slot of its own. On top of this, Chunky is both creator and cajoler; and 2012 will see the release of his own double-pack EP of ‘Chunkadelic’ productions on Swamp81 Records. Like a fast-spreading epidemic, there is hardly a festival or celebrated venue in the UK where Chunky has not united the dance; and – frighteningly – at the age of 23, he’s barely written the prologue.
