The Late Show presents Auntie Flo

  • Its been a longish while since we've had an international guest in the back bar cage at The Late Show. We're glad to say the drought will break on Saturday 25th May when Auntie Flo arrives for his debut Melbourne club show. We've been getting pretty hot under the collar for the Glaswegian's afro-centric output over the last couple of years and we're wrapped to welcome him to The Late Show alongside our resident afro/tropical tastemakers Paz and Lewis Cancut. Brian d'Souza aka Auntie Flo hails from Goa by way of Glasgow, where he is currently resident DJ at the club Highlife. Auntie Flo's productions have been causing a recent stir with his debut Goan Highlife EP from 2011 on Huntleys and Palmers winning him fans across the musical spectrum. It sold out on pre-order leading to an immediate repress and has been included in the sets of Ricardo Villalobos, Gilles Peterson, Andrew Weatherall, Caribou, Tensnake amongst others. Next up, 'Oh My Days' which was supported getting played by Jackmaster, Joy Orbison and Pearson Sound, the later of whom liked it so much he asked if he could remix it. 2012 saw the release of Auntie Flo's Future Rhythm Machine mini-album which dropped in June to 5/5 reviews (Q Magazine) and was selected as Bleep.com's top ten albums of the year. 2012 has also seen the releases of Auntie Flo's 'Rituals' series with 3 new tracks released via Mule Musiq and Kompakt, as part of their legendary Speicher series. Remixes are also due on Soundway, Chemikal Underground, Civil Music and One Eyed Jacks to name a few. Auntie Flo's Highlife residency and radio show on Radio Comeme with Esa Williams focuses on 'future afro-beat' sounds from the across the black Atlantic diaspora - everything from Chicago House, Detroit Techno and Disco to Cumbia, Kwaito and Afrobeat. Last year, Highlife celebrated it's 2nd birthday with Cut Hands and an off-Sonar beach party in Barcelona and it continue to explore new musical cultures from around the globe including a UK debut for Mexican Rebolledo (C meme), early acid / synth pioneer Charanjit Singh from Bombay, A Journey to the Black Atlantic with Actress (Honest Jons), Mim Suleiman from Tanzania, UK Funky from T. Williams, jackin' house from JD Twitch (Optimo) and Capracara (DFA / Soul Jazz).
