Bass Coast 2013

  • PRESENTING OUR YEAR OF THE ZEBRA 2013 LINE-UP! We’d like to take a moment to appreciate the sheer number and quality of the submissions we received this year. Although having a smaller scale festival means that we need to curate a somewhat modest selection of artists from those who submitted, we’d like to reiterate that we very much acknowledge and value ALL of the artists who make up our community. Regardless as to whose names are on this list, Bass Coast exists for and because of you. Thank you. This year we are continuing in our tradition of offering a line-up that spans both emerging and established artists, representing sounds in House, Bass, Techno, Funk, DnB, Footwork, Jungle, Dancehall, Reggae, Garage, Future and the many shades in between. The visual/installation art line-up will be selected by May 30 and we’ll have profiles up for all artists very soon. As usual we’re serving a heavy representation of Pacific Northwest talent. Year after year we feel that the importance of supporting and featuring our local acts is happily made easy by the fact that they continue to prove themselves world-class artists in their own right. We’ve also selected international names that we feel continue to make strides in terms of both where we are now and where we are headed, cross-genre, with electronic music. Rounding out the programming this year is vibrancy from our featured performance artists as well as the addition of a new nighttime chill/downtempo stage in the Bigger Brain. YEAR OF THE ZEBRA: Originality and Balance. Our aim is to have this line-up reflect that. This is our coast, our culture, our festival… and our new home. Xoxo Bass Coast Girls. If you’re unfamiliar with any of our headlining artists, here’s some info to get you up to speed! Goth Trad (Deep Medi) Hailing from Japan, Goth Trad is revered for his exceptionally heavy and visceral live bass music sets. Releasing music alongside dubstep dons Mala, Kode 9, Silkie and Quest, Bass Coast is excited to host an integral component of the original dubstep movement. Dark Sky (Tectonic, 50 Weapons) Dark Sky is at the vanguard of dance music, boasting fierce releases on key imprints like 50 Weapons, Blunted Robots and Tectonic. With support from tastemakers Gilles Peterson, Sinden, The XX and Modeselektor, Dark Sky is taking over 2013. Om Unit (Civil Music) Om Unit has built a deserved reputation as one of the strongest and most consistent artists in the electronic sphere. His output, packed with unique combinations of style and diverse demonstrations of its makers’ adaptability, is consistently shaping music’s electronic landscape. J. Phlip (Dirtybird) J. Phlip’s skills on the decks and in the studio secured her a highly desirable spot as an official member of the Dirtybird Crew, after signing her first record to them in 2008. She is currently Claude VonStroke’s favorite support DJ and plays amazing high-profile gigs at Fabric, Space Ibiza, Back to Basics and Watergate. JETS (Leisure System) Jets is a unique collaboration between Machinedrum and Jimmy Edgar. The pair represent electronic music’s most celebrated solo commodities: born in Detroit, Jimmy Edgar has been releasing his brand of oversexed cyber-funk on labels like Warp, !K7 and Hotflush for the best part of a decade now, while Stewart has been in operation for even longer. A recent addition to the legendary Ninja Tune imprint, watch for exciting new material from Machinedrum, dropping soon. Justin Martin (Dirtybird) Music journalists typically describe Justin’s sound as ‘melodic and tough.’ His productions encapsulate both melody and emotional depth, while containing the ass shaking properties to translate to the dance floor. When recently questioned by Resident Advisor on what he’d be doing if he wasn’t a DJ or dance music producer he just replied: “Wishing I was a DJ or music producer.” Nautiluss (Hemlock, Turbo) The sound of Nautiluss is subtle but organic, intriguing but heavy. His desire for exploration has led him to take on a wide range of musical influences and skillfully navigate between genres; breaking them down and making them bleed through the boundary lines. Nautiluss pushes against the darker edges of house and techno, forging a sound that has earned support from supreme tastemakers like Martyn, Untold, Gesaffelstein, and Ivan Smagghe. Grenier (Tectonic, Frite Nite) Grenier’s performance behind the decks reveals his wide-ranging tastes and smart grip on dance music. His elegantly paced sets are full of his own productions and like-minded efforts from dance music contemporaries. Grenier’s esthetic really jives with Bass Coast Project and we’re excited to welcome his back for his third festival performance.
