Following-on from our launch night in Dance Tunnel, Machine Rituals are pleased to present a night with Werkdiscs.
Since its inception ten odd years ago, Werkdiscs has served as a home for the likes of Zomby, Starkey, Nochexxx, Lukid and Lone, as well of course to label head Actress. Following a team-up with Ninja Tune, this year has seen the imprint put out Moiré‘s highly respectable Never Sleep EP, and the recently announced debut from Hamburg’s Helena Hauff.

Actress
Actress isn't your regular techno producer, if you can call him that at all. The founder of Werkdiscs has flitted between electro, hip-hop, house and techno over the past nine years, finding something close to a home in the smoke-filled recesses of some lost Underground Resistance bunker. He's an artist whose restless, unforgivingly manipulated music is just as suited to soundtracking installations as it is bellowing out into a nightclub.
While 2010's maserpiece 'Splazsh' created extraordinary hybrids of everything from Detroit techno and jack house to 2-step garage, EBM and funk-rock, last year's R.I.P. looked deeply inward into a withdrawn universe, inhabiting some imagined catacombs between the rhythms of established genres.

Moiré
Moiré emerged in February with the Never Sleep EP on Actress’ Werkdiscs imprint, a record whose muddy yet strangely melodic take on house and techno made him a logical addition to the label’s discography, alongside the aforementioned Actress, Lukid, and Lone, and won a fair few admirers in the process
The mysteriously faceless producer's next EP 'Rolx' has just dropped on excellent Dutch imprint Rush Hour, and features three more tracks of deliberately damaged “London techno”. ‘I Don’t Get It’ is a hissing, blunted house cut, whereas ‘Rolx’ has some sets syrup-thick synth pads over a rhythm track that could fall apart at any minute. ‘Real Special’, meanwhile, is the closest in spirit to Actress in warped electro mode.
