DJ Sprinkles aka Terre Thaemlitz is a critically acclaimed media producer, writer, public speaker, educator, audio remixer, DJ and owner of the Comatonse Recordings record label establsihed in 1993. Her work combines a critical look at identity politics - including, but not limited to, gender, sexuality, class, linguistics, ethnicity and race - with an ongoing analysis of the socio-economics of commercial media production.
Thaemlitz has released over 15 solo albums, as well as numerous 12-inch singles and video works. Her writings on music and culture have been published internationally in a number of books, academic journals and magazines.
Thaemlitz became known for his unique intermixing of musical genres and moods, her parties dubbed "DJ Sprinkles' Deeperama" - an approach which preceded the presence of "Chill Rooms" in New York. DJ Sprinkles' Deeperama became a resident party held on the second friday of every month at Club Module in Tokyo between 2003-2006, and continues today through one-off engagements around the world.
DJ Sprinkles' debut artist album - Midtown 120 Blues - released in 2009 came to embody a dissenting voice whereby the contextual culture and sonic signature of house music are turned on themselves in order to highlight the dissociative spaces, distribution channels and subsequent distorted histories that have come to occupy underground dance music culture - reminding listeners that house is more of a situation than a sound.
August 16th, we are delighted and equally excited to welcome Terre Thaemlitz back to Australia for the first time since 2004 and for her debut performance under the guise of DJ Sprinkles.
