Out of the ashes of Columbus's first techno "band", Body Release, ele_mental was born in 1993 from the convergence of like-minded Ohio State University art, film, music & media art students Charles Noel, Ed Luna, Titonton Duvanté and Todd Sines. In May 1993, they held their first public event "ele_mental" held at an OSU parking garage with DJs Dieselboy, Titonton, Noel, Sines, and more. With 150 in attendance, traveling from Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and Cleveland, the group's influence on the electronic music underground scene in the area put Columbus, Ohio on the map for decades to follow.
In 1994, Noel formed the first Columbus electronic dance music label "21/22 Corp." with Luna following his Fusion cassette series of electronic music artists, then went on to record for Black Nation, German imprint Ongaku, Dutch imprint Raw Fusion and many more. Duvanté recorded for Cleveland artist Dan Curtin's Metamorphic label, then formed Residual, a revered label for house & techno, featuring artists Morgan Geist, Fabrice Lig, Boo Williams, John Tejada and Todd Sines; with additional releases on 7th City, Planet E, 2000 Black amongst others. Sines was signed to Detroit artist Carl Craig's Planet E, Daniel Bell's 7th City, and British label Peacefrog, in addition to Germany's Background & YORE, French imprint Frankie, and collaborations with Death in Vegas' Richard Fearless, Yoko Ono, !!!, and remixing the godfather of acid house, Alexander Robotnick.
Their connections with other artists have served to inspire and attract talent from all over, including Claude Young, Carl Craig, Morgan Geist, 4 Hero, UR's Mad Mike & Rolando, Moonstarr, Oval, Monolake, Safety Scissors, Sutekh, Pole, Dan Curtin and dozens more throughout various “ele_related” events, concerts, recordings and appearances. Over the last 20 years, the core nucleus members and free electrons (FBK / Sleep Engineer, Divine, etc) have been responsible for some of world’s deepest music, art events and experiences.
Since 2003, Noel, Duvanté, Sines have relocated to NYC, and explored more facets of the NYC scene in house, techno and post punk, connecting with forward thinking events and promoters from The Bunker, Black Market Membership, Bagpak, Mutual Dreaming, Heathered Pearls and more. Their friendships with long-time locals such as Ulysses (Neurotic Drum Band) and Traversable Wormhole's Adam X — who helped "break" Sines' first record on Peacefrog through his store & mail order, Sonic Groove in 1994, have inspired them to plant roots and become part of the fabric of the NYC scene.
While Traversable Wormhole is a relatively new project, Adam X needs no introduction. For the past 20+ years Adam has been evangelizing groundbreaking dance music; as a store owner, a promoter, a DJ, and a musician. His exploration into the darker side of deep sci-fi techno has earned praise and accolades all over. His live sets walk the line between dub techno, early industrial, and futuristic sound design, echoing Blade Runner-esque sound scapes via Berlin's Basic Channel.
DJ QU rounds out the end of the night with the darker side of house music. The local has made a name for himself over the last 8 years representing a new era of NYC house music with his own Strength Music label, in addition to his production work with Deconstruct Music, Jus Ed's Underground Quality, Fred P's Soul People Music, and more. Soulful, deep, dark and futuristic, it is the perfect sound to round out the night.
Opening and in between live sets is long time producer, DJ, man-about-town, NYC tour guide and friend, Ulysses, aka Elliot Taub. Over the last decade he's played the world over and produced records for Lasergun, Teknotika, Plastic City, Wurst, Hallucination LTD, Memory Boy, and his own Scatalogics; in addition to his work with John Selway as Neurotic Drum Band.
