  • Huntleys & Palmers team up with Corsica Studios to introduce an exploration into Afrofuturism. Presenting Hieroglyphic Being to perform a rare extended set in London alongside a live set from past Highlife guest Cut Hands. In support will be London-based experimental band, Gum Takes Tooth and Glaswegian Highlife founder, Auntie Flo. Over the past 3 years in Glasgow, HIGHLIFE has brought a fresh approach to music from around the world. From exploring themes such as Afrofuturism with Actress, Shackleton and Romare to presenting musical talent from every corner of the world including Mexico's Rebolledo, Matias Aguayo and Alejandro Paz from Chile, Zanzibar's Mim Suleiman and Indian proto-acid house from Charanjit Singh. We introduced Highlife to London at the James Holden album launch at Corsica Studios in June - where previous guest Awesome Tapes From Africa played alongside the magnificent Heatsick. - Jamal Moss' Hieroglyphic Being project has been of interest to us for some time; channeling his influences from Sun Ra and Ron Hardy, his productions and DJ'ing collide while performing in person as he re-edits while playing a heady collision of genres - including EBM, House, Techno, and Jazz as witnessed in his FACT mix. His Mathematics label has been responsible for championing artists from Adonis to John Heckle. In 2002, being inspired by Haitian vaudou musicians’ capacity to make intensely powerful music with almost no technology, William Bennett employed djembes and doundouns on the classic Wriggle Like A Fucking Eel 12” by Whitehouse. At the time this was seen as a radical musical departure by many in the wider noise/industrial scene. Over a decade later and William's Cut Hands project continues to be fully realised, and celebrated with records on Blackest Ever Black and Downwards and live shows around the world. Original African percussion instruments are the source to create a unique and gut wrenching polyrhythmic soundscape "joining the dots between African rhythms, the percussive minimalism of Steve Reich and the industrial techno of Regis" - we look forward to a Cut Hands induced outbreak of dancing mania. Gum Takes Tooth (live) are two opposing drummers and noise/synth/fx spontaneously combusting to ignite a dense, focussed rhythm engine to propel thunderous evolving acid synth and refracted vocal manipulations as motorik astrally projected drive-trains thrust through haunted subterranean soundscapes into epic swathes of crushing synth riffing heavy enough to compete with any de-tuned guitar monster. Their next release 'Buried Fires' is out on Endtyme Records at the end of August, to be followed by a remix by Cut Hands. Join us
