Bloc: Dopplereffekt / Legowelt / Dave Monolith

  • Gerald Donald’s enigmatic Detroitian influence on techno worldwide has been the subject of much hushed and reverential discussion. Dopplereffekt’s later obsession with science, synthesis and the superhuman gave a further esoteric edge to an artist who, like Dave in 2001, had abandoned the physical world to inhabit a plane composed of ideas rather than molecules. In fact, so much grey matter has been spilled poring over his quasi-mythological output it’s possible to forget that underpinning the multiple identities and mysterious personality is a catalogue of muscular dancefloor weaponry that has blown the roof of Bloc’s dancefloor many times as a staple of the Bloc DJ’s resident sets. You’ll know Drexcyia, Japanese Telecom and Arpanet, but definitely check out Glass Domain if you haven’t already. We were also thrilled to hear that agenda-setting Berlin label Leisure System will be bringing forth new audio from the Dopplereffekt laboratory. His website www.legowelt.com remains a wonderful place to while away many hours silently fist-pumping in headphones along to the vast library of audio, and having a bit of a geek-off to his repository of obsolete computer programs and long lists of studio kit that has produced some of his favourite sounds. But we always felt that the world was waiting to find out about Legowelt in a big way. Recent Bloc collaborationists L.I.E.S. released a lush, deep EP that foreshadowed what was to appear on Clone in 2012 – the breakthrough smash ‘Paranormal Soul’. It’s been seriously heartening to see the attention and acclaim that’s been heaped on one of our favourite artists and we’re all of tizz with the anticipation of seeing him boss about the main room at Autumn Street. Dave Monolith’s abstract workouts on Rephlex are more than just a nostalgic blast of the glory days of braindance. If it’s a grey day, things aren’t quite working out and you could only find mismatched socks that morning, Monolith’s rushingly life-affirming, twisted electronics are scientifically proven to lift your spirits heavenwards. It’s his first time at Bloc, so be nice.
