One of dance music's most mysterious and influential figures, ZOMBY, is set to play one of his very rare DJ shows in Melbourne at New Guernica on Friday 13 September, his first ever performance in the city. Tickets will go on sale Thursday 15 August.
Zomby is an undeniable critical marvel praised from Fact Magazine to Pitchfork to The Guardian, though he remains a mystery to most media. He keeps his name and face hidden, very rarely giving interviews and DJing even less – making this show that much more special.
Zomby emerged on the scene in 2008, pioneering advances in bass music through mixtapes referencing Gucci Mane and Aaliyah, but with a head firmly in the emerging post-dubstep undercurrent building at the time. His contemporaries like Burial and Kode9 were swiftly laying the foundations for current acts like James Blake, Jamie Woon and Mount Kimbie by experimenting with sounds of garage, grime and dubstep – breaking the rules these styles had already sought to build.
His 2008 release, ‘Where Were U in '92’ became a theme that is still relevant today, asking the question, “Where were you at this seminal time in rave culture?”, a motif referenced by M.I.A soon after its release.
Zomby's position as a pioneer was quickly noted by 4AD (Grimes, Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti) who signed him up. 2013 saw him release his most recent album ‘With Love’, again via 4AD, and raise the bar in thought-provoking dance music. ‘With Love’ is an astonishing 33-track release that collectively traces an arc through dance music’s history, revealing an artist in his most creative phase yet.
Divided into two volumes, it moves between a dancefloor focus and darkened emotional introspection. ‘With Love’ is the work of a producer who has absorbed the shifting textures and plains of electronic music firsthand, and reconfigured them into a definitive, sprawling love letter to the soulful dance music of his past.
