Reviveher - Mcde, Eddie C, Move D, Mark E

  • We’re not going to lie. It will be difficult to top that birthday feeling, but with 4 years behind us we feel more determined than ever to party on! For every balloon inflated, every failed visa or council hijack we’ve experienced, there’s been love over flowing in return. We thank you for throwing your shapes so emphatically and making every moment worth raving. Now the sun must rise again to cast its warm psychedelic haze over ReviveHER. Following the success of our concept night ‘Jack 2 Jack’, we bring you… M otor City Drum Ensemble Eddie C Move D Mark E What’s in a name?? Back in 2011 we hosted a fully-fledged Jackathon called ‘Jack 2 Jack’ featuring the definitive jackist Farley Jackmaster Funk, alongside soon to be feted jacker Jackmaster and Jack The Tab. Our tongue in cheek proposal captured the imagination of the public and received a Metro spread, No.1 listing in the Guardian Guide and Timeout as well as features in Dazed, Dummy and FACT. The event inspired an infectious sense of playfulness in everyone. The people came to JACK. This time Motor City Drum Ensemble heads up the bill and we’ve limited ourselves accordingly to artists whose names come together to form the acronym M C D E. This is not just an ode to their Detroitine traits. As Stravinsky puts it, “Only by restricting myself can I be free” and by so doing we’ve struck upon arguably our most genius line up to date. This quartet has ReviveHER written all over it. Although there’s a musical thread that connects them – warm, rough edged production and a classic sound - they hail from very different worlds. Each individual is a trailblazer in their own right and on Friday 29th November they play side by side for the first time. M otor City Drum Ensemble Maestro Danilo Plessow aka Motor City Drum Ensemble was born in German ‘motor city’ Stuttgart. He possesses a comprehensive collection of drum machines and synthesizers that he calls his ‘ensemble’…and he is their conductor. Danilo began releasing broken beat and nu jazz at the age of 15. Gilles Peterson eagerly championed the music of ‘Inverse Cinematics’ but it wasn’t until six years later after turning to house that he received widespread acclaim for the seminal ‘Raw Cuts’ series in 2008. In bringing back the rough and ready sampling techniques of the 90s, MCDE caused a paradigm shift in production. A testament to the longevity of his sound are the Raw Cuts singles, which remain in Juno’s top 6 best sellers to this day. He also ranks amongst the top 10 most charted artists on Resident Advisor. His infamous DJ Kicks mix confirmed his credentials as an inventive selector with a deep-set knowledge. His sets strike the perfect balance between a beautifully shaped emotional contour and a finely tuned groove. This coupled with his technical expertise as a DJ make him an irresistible artist to hear behind the decks. With as few as 8 12” releases since his MCDE career started in 2007, Danilo feels like a timeless producer that has been around for at least two decades, yet it’s this quality over quantity output that has earned him such a valuable reputation. C Eddie C was raised in Southern Ontario somewhere between Detroit and Montreal. His music is indicative of early experiments with tape edits and instrumental hip-hop. This fascination with sampling led him to tune his efforts to the dance-floor. Alongside fellow guest Mark E, he is considered a modern master of the ‘re-edit’. The rejuvenating quality of this work provides an essential education to future generations. This idea of preservation – of keeping good music alive – is a predominant theme throughout. Since 2009 Eddie has gained a steady cult following off the back of 25 original EPs and singles, countless remixes and edits (Jiscomusic, Endless Flight, Crue-L, Sleazy Beats, Kolour Ltd, 7 Inches of Love & Home Taping). In 2011 he released his first long player "Parts Unknown" on Endless Flight and soon after launched his own Red Motorbike 7” imprint. Since relocating to Berlin he’s been in competition with Europe’s fiercest crate-diggers, but he never fails to gift us jewels every time we hear him. Seco Bar in Tokyo flew him over recently just for one night with previous ReviveHER guest Justin V to close their venue for good and we witnessed the perfection. We can’t wait to bring Eddie back ourselves. D The incomparable David Moufang returns as Move D. You may remember him appear with Juju and Jordash and their crazy analogue ensemble ‘Magic Mountain High’ back in March. A DJ set from this great professor always delivers from the deepest, warmest dominions of house. He’s an institution with a hallmark of quality stretching out across 20 years of releases on labels like Compost, Smallville, Warp, Source Records, Uzuri, Bine, Plug Research, Running Back, Workshop and Modern Love. He’s also the founder of cult 90s imprints 'Source Records' and KM20, of which unreleased material is getting a new home under Jordan Czamanski’s (of Juju & Jordash) new Off Minor label. We can’t wait to be cradled once again within the womb-like sphere of his creative genius. E Mark E’s reputation has gained a slow steady ascension, predominantly as a re-editor and in recent years as a fully-fledged dance music producer in his own right. The fact that he’s the only person putting Birmingham in this on the map in this century has only made him more determined to pursue his mission. Famous for his searing slow-burners, Mark’s music has an unerring, hypnotic quality that once in full flow sets an assuredly satisfying groove. The anticipation of those moments makes it all the more enticing. His first break came from a rather special edit of Womack and Womack's "Baby I'm Scared of You" that was first championed again by good old Gilles Peterson back in 2005 and has since become a modern classic for all DJs alike. Mark released his first album ‘Stone Breaker’ on Matthew Dear’s Ghostly International in 2011. Since then he’s been focusing on his own MERC imprint whilst continuing to put out quality remixes and edits on high quality respected labels like Running Back, Jiscomusic and Golf Channel. Next year he returns to Ghostly with a follow up album and will also feature in some form on our very own ReviveHER Records, so watch out! With over 20 years experience of DJing like Move D, you can expect classic house from the vaults mixed with a versatile array of music new and old, spliced with his own unreleased nuggets and edits for good measure. Venue We thought long and hard about the forum for this collision of musical namesakes. We needed somewhere with more than one room, so that each maestro that makes up this one off four piece has the time and space to breath, to construct a set that goes beyond a short sharp outpouring of favourites crammed into a frenetic hour and a half and gives these masters license to weave their magic fully, all the more for the spells they cast to take hold of the crowd. We needed a space with great sound spread across all rooms to do justice to the reason we're all there - the music. Finally, we needed somewhere we could lay down our own stamp, with our own production and ensure the decor, the vibe, the feng shui, whatever you want to call it, is ReviveHER through and through. So on Friday November 29th we shall be welcoming our ReviveHERs back to Corsica Studios, but this time as you've never seen it before. Taking over the adjacent space to utilise all three Function One fitted rooms, changing the circulation of the space, setting up an extra bar and giving it a RevivHER make-over that befits an event as unique, as special and as downright fun as this one. We can't wait to delight our revellers with a party play house to remember, on a night we hope you'll never forget. We have now issued our final ticket release for this event and expect these to all go! We're truly glad and blessed that Corsica Studios are able to allow us access to all 3 rooms so more of you can enjoy this highly demanded event. Sharpen your ears, open your hearts and channel your minds to the sounds of M C D and E. Their sum will be much greater than anything you could possibly imagine…
