Sydney Festival 2014: Paradiso - Modular presents Juan Atkins

  • Iconic Australian label Modular will take over Paradiso at Town Hall for one night only, assembling an eclectic line-up of international and home-grown talent that promises to keep you on the dance floor. Headlining the night will be visionary Juan Atkins, the man widely regarded responsible for pioneering the most influential electronic music discography since Kraftwerk. Credited as the originator of Detroit techno music, alongside Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson, Juan Atkins has been at the very forefront of the techno movement for decades. Blurring his name behind the aliases such as Cybotron, Model 500, Metroplex, Infinity and The Belleville Three to release many classics of sublime Detroit techno, Atkins stands as the most influential body of work in the field and an undisputed driving force in electronic music. Rising stars Movement are a trio from Sydney, building steam from a grain of salt with their seductive nocturnal music. Composed in a bedroom somewhere in the suburbs at night, their lucid, spacious and engagingly rhythmic body of music is the perfect soundtrack to summer. The trio‟s current single „Us‟, has received rave reviews around the globe, including Pitchfork‟s “Best New Track”. Roland Tings is the energy alchemist behind the next beat connection on Club Mod, Modular's booming baby brother. The prolific Melbourne-based producer and acid house lab rat (real name Rohan Newman) released his newest single Tomita's Basement/Cagean Sea in August, made in Tomita's basement in Berlin. A propulsive modular synth workout from far below the surface, the track pays tribute to Japanese composer Yann Tomita and Junior Boys' Jeremy Greenspan plunges even further into the abyss on his take. Bass and techno futurists wordlife joined the Modular roster earlier this year, were named one of inthemix's “Producers to Watch” in 2012 and have been cranking dance floors since the release of their debut EP Birth, Punk, Rap, House, Life on Bang Gang 12"s. wordlife combine soulful vocals with futuristic house n' techno, flipping the script to write 80bpm futuristic dancehall-infused rap beats and mixing deconstructed versions of their own tracks with live MPC, drum machine and vocals in their live performances. Sydney duo Softwar produce classic house music with a loving nod to the 90s. Considered one of the most exciting DJ duos in the country, Jeremy Lloyd and Myles Du Chateau have also carved out an enviable reputation with their studio productions and remixes for the likes of Bag Raiders, Azari & III, Rufus, Groove Armada and Two Door Cinema Club.
