  • Hailed as the 'Hendrix of his generation' for his cosmic tapestry of rave-ready beats and body-rupturing bass, visionary avant-electronic artist and producer Flying Lotus will make his standalone Sydney Opera House debut with Layer 3, his spectacular live audiovisual show on Sunday 9 March, 2014. Following the eye-popping marvels of Kraftwerk's celebrated catalogue performances and Amon Tobin's monolithic ISAM Live, Steven Ellison aka Flying Lotus’ Layer 3 will take audiences on a head-spinning journey through his four critically acclaimed albums of video-game futurism and sci-fi classics, transforming the Concert Hall into a Kubrick-like 2001: A Space Odyssey. Ben Marshall Sydney Opera House Head of Contemporary Music said, "I genuinely feel Flying Lotus is the future with his thrillingly multidisciplinary interests, his immense attention to detail and concepts all shot through with an infectious sense of fun and exuberance." "His riveting Layer 3 audiovisual project caught my eye the moment it was unveiled a year ago and it’s wonderful that it can make its Sydney debut at the Opera House. I think he’s going to blow some minds in here." Drawing from the legendary history of home-label Warp Records and pioneering hip-hop don J Dilla, the 30 year-old multidisciplinary American artist has spearheaded a future-facing movement armed with time-splintering instrumentals dubbed 'The sound of the future,' (NME) – redefining the cerebral boundaries of heart-pounding club and bedroom-born, bass-psych classics alike – collaborating with seminal guest vocalists Thom Yorke and Erykah Badu in the process. Proving the natural successor to his great aunt Alice Coltrane with his ambient hiptronica on 2006’s debut 1983, to his ground-breaking hometown LP, Los Angeles (2008) and his sprawling, spiritual masterpiece Cosmogramma (2010), Ellison has absorbed the seductive liberties of freeform jazz into performances that are physically infectious and never the same, looping in Radiohead and Beastie Boys remixes in the process. Armed with his most melodic, harmonious record yet with the dream-like Until the Quiet Comes (2012) his highest charting release (#34 on the US Billboard 200), the years-in-the-making Layer 3 sees “One of the most revered producers of his generation,” (Clash Music) performing within a two-screen setup, triggering his signature video-game funk and in-the-pocket rhythms with live visuals, alongside long-term collaborators and Brainfeeder affiliates, Strangeloop and Timeboy. Following a year of high-end collaborations with Odd Future's Earl Sweatshirt, Kendrick Lamar and a curated soundtrack for the billion-selling Grand Theft Auto V, FlyLo will make his Sydney return with a mind-blowing audiovisual performance, akin to “watching a 3D live visual show, without the glasses on,” (Interview Magazine) transforming his catalogue of roof-raising bass and cinematic beauty into the ultimate real-life video-game fantasy, on the Opera House stage. This performance is part of Music at the House, the contemporary music program presented by Sydney Opera House that includes upcoming performances by CHIC featuring Nile Rodgers, Grizzly Bear, Bonobo, The National, Neko Case, Yo La Tengo and Iron & Wine, and has included performances by James Blake, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds and more.
