The Berlin Sessions

  • The creative energy of Berlin is palpable. A city constantly redefining itself, it has one of the most diverse and vibrant art, music and nightlife scenes in the world. In celebration of this exciting metropolis, Beck’s Fusions presents The Berlin Sessions, a unique series of club events that aim to musically and experientially reflect what a great night out in Berlin is all about – music, art and experiences that challenge, entertain and inspire us. In keeping with Berlin’s underground edge, each venue will be transformed into a self-contained mini-festival space. The Civic in Sydney will utilise three levels and a laneway (including a ‘Secret Love’ nu folk rooftop!). Miss Libertine in Melbourne and Barsoma in Brisbane will utilise gallery spaces displaying video installations showing the making of the event artwork, and footage of temporary spaces from Berlin. The events feature a combination of established, underground and cutting edge Berlin-based artists, together with locals who have a connection with Berlin’s scene and sound. The Berlin Sessions feature Jazzanova (Sonar Kollektiv), Quarion (Drumpoet Community) and Heiko Laux (Kanzleramt) - three Berlin residents, each world class DJ/producers. Jazzanova are a DJ and production team that need little introduction. Having stretched the borders of contemporary club music like no-one else, Jazzanova know how to make a dancefloor move and in all the right ways. From hip hop to jazz to disco to deep house, Jazzanova have been at the cutting edge of electronic music for over a decade, often one step ahead of the curve whilst breaking new sounds in clubs around the world. Having remixed everyone from Master at Work, Fat Freddys Drop and MJ Cole through to Common and Lenny Kravitz, Jazzanova have built up a global reputation for the best in forward thinking dancefloor music. At the helm of the powerhouse Sonar Kollektiv, a Berlin based label with more then 200 catalogue releases from artists like Âme, Dixon, Wahoo, Azymuth, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Domu, Dimlite, Robag Wruhme, and of course Jazzanova themselves, Sonar Kollektiv can claim to be one of the strongest and best-known German labels of our time. Quarion is Swiss born DJ and producer signed to the up and coming Drumpoet Community label (a sublabel of Compost Records). Quarion is one of the hotshots of the deep house renaissance that is currently sweeping Europe, and will be playing his live set on this tour, a sound that harks back to the roots of hypnotic dance music. Having recently moved to Berlin, Quarion has seen his star take off at an alarming rate with tracks licensed to !K7, Get Physical, Resopal, Schema, Compost Black Label and Future Classic with high profile fans like Âme, Dixon, Derrick May & Booka Shade giving his work their stamp of approval. Heiko Laux is the founder of cult German techno label Kanzleramt and is a veteran of the Berlin scene, playing all the biggest clubs and festivals. A master of the early hours of the morning, Heiko is a techno purist with a reputation for quality built over a career spanning two decades. Booked for his first live gig by Sven Väth at the ‘Omen’ club in the mid 90s, Heiko Laux has produced with many artists including Anthony Rother, Fabrice Lig, Steve Rachmad, and Ellen Allien, and has been remixed by numerous artists including Alter Ego, Surgeon and Ricardo Villalobos. To date Kanzleramt has put out over 140 releases with Heiko himself releasing 5 artist albums and multiple 12 inches. The label’s style can be described as ‘songmode’ techno – deep techno with heart, soul, and much more than just drums.
