  • East German electronics reanimated by the co-founder of Raster Noton The severe, minimal aesthetic of Raster Noton was established in the 1990s by Carsten Nicolai, Olaf Bender and Frank Bretschneider and has persisted through myriad stylistic mutations in electronic music. In this North American Premiere, Bretschneider applies his characteristic rigour to resurrecting an electronic artifact. In 2007, Frank Bretschneider was invited to compose music for the Subharchord, a unique electronic “special effects” instrument developed during the 1960’s at the RFZ, the technical centre for radio and television of the East German postal service. Only eight were built and only three Subharcords are believed to survive to this day. Seeking to blend the Subharchord’s sinister analog timbres with contemporary musical ideas, Bretschneider premiered these works in June 2007 in Berlin. Slightly editing the original live recording and adding new overdubs, Bretschneider created a compelling and flowing 37-minute version of Kippschwingungen for release on the Line label. He won’t be bringing the Subharchord to the Music Gallery (approximate weight: 100 kilograms) but will recreate his experiments to devastating effect accompanied by his own improvised visual accompaniment. This concert also marks the world premeire of Michael Trommer and Nokami’s HTO — a reference to the chemical composition of water, as well as to Toronto’s nickname of ‘T.O.’. Via field recordings sourced from the city’s urban waterfront, buried rivers and vanished shorelines, HTO is a sonic exploration of Toronto’s water-related history. Workshop 11.28.13 | 6PM |OCADU (100 McCaul St.) Free Bretschneider explains the relation between audio and visual and shows examples of how to use and connect hardware and software internally and externally via MIDI and/or audio. This will be a great workshop for those interested in expert-level digital audio-visual coordination. Frank Bretschneider Artist’s Talk 11.29.13 | 5PM | Goethe Institut (100 University Ave.) Free
