Mixing broken polyrhythms, live instrumentation and a heavy dose of funk, his genre-defying DJ sets showcase the organic side of electronic music. Starting out in 1996, Striz developed his crowd rocking abilities at college house parties playing golden age hip hop. After moving back to sweet home Chicago in 2000, he co-founded illmeasures, a collective of DJs, producers, and designers that has been keeping the local underground scene alive through club nights (Madbar, Smartbar, Big Wig, Lava Lounge) and legendary large-scale loft and warehouse parties. Living in Madrid and his 3 year employment at Groove Distribution (a jazzy underground record importer) opened his ears to new styles of electronic music from around the world and expanded his music collection to encompass a multitude of tempos and moods. Recently Striz has been chosen to perform alongside numerous international talents including Tricky, Jazzanova, DJ Krush, Jamie XX, LoSoul, Diplo, Four Tet, Eats Everything, Roman Flugel, Derrick Carter, Bonobo, Freq Nasty, James Murphy, Pezzner, Nightmares On Wax, DJ Food, Metro Area, The Herbaliser, Quantic, and many others of myriad disciplines. On top of that, he is a lead producer for a monthly series of burner-oriented underground gatherings called The Freakeasy, and also for an annual burner community throwdown called Resonate that has been building for 8 years and sold out Metro/Smartbar several times (See illmeasures.com for many recorded sets and event photos). He has had the distinct honor of playing twice at Eighteenth Street lounge in DC (the national downtempo mecca owned by Thievery Corporation) and also performed twice at Millennium Park in Chicago. He was called upon to be involved with past 2 seasons of Music Now!, a monthly showcase of new music featuring members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Having been immersed in electronic music for nearly 15 years, his experience with and knowledge of it runs deep. http://www.freakeasy.net/ http://www.illmeasures.com/ NATE MANIC Nate Manic's presence on the Midwest dance scene can be described as nothing less than ubiquitous, with hundreds of appearances at the region's best venues and events over a career spanning 10+ years. Always setting high goals and looking to the future, he continues to be a respected member of Chicago and the Midwest's history with significant contributions to it's dance community. Originally from a small town south of Green Bay WI, Nate first discovered dance music through a year-long exchange program to Germany. Already a child prodigy who learned to play organ at 2, sing at 11 and play guitar at 13, he fell in love with the sound and made it a point to learn as much about this burgeoning culture as possible. Upon return, Nate furthered his musical education through a 4-year, full-tuition music scholarship for voice to UW-Madison. Unfortunately the university environment was not for him and he withdrew from the UW in order to attend the Madison Media Institute and attain an Associates Degree in Music Recording Technology. In 1997, Nate bought his first pair of turntables and started doing regular nights at the Cardinal Dance Club, a mainstay on the Madison WI scene. Nate garnered a fair amount of respect there, showcasing his skills and putting on events with DJ/producers including Robbie Hardkiss, Halo, Sleepy C, Doran and a host of local up-and-comers. In 2000 Nate moved to Chicago, where he took off very quickly on the local scene through performances at Pure's Future Sound of Chicago showcases, Smart Bar, Crobar, Big Wig, Zentra and guestpots all over the Midwest. More invitations came in, with gigs at London's Cross, Hawaii's Sunnlounge, Milwaukee's Summerfest and Pridefest, the notorious Burning Man festival in Nevada and other spots performing with DJs including Ian Pooley, DJ Krush, Derrick Carter, Juan Atkins, Kaskade (whom he's appeared with a solid half dozen times at Smart Bar), Colette, Luke Solomon and others. In 2003 Nate took over as Music Director and promoter at Wicker Park's popular see-and-be-seen lounge Moonshine, where his Thursday night event, Therapy, continued for more than 3 years and played host to the Midwest's top DJ talent. In addition to his very successful Sunday Morning Funk and Soul Brunch there, Nate also came on as an occasional Saturday night resident. Around that same time Nate started doing production work and released his first EP, "Arcade Beats", on Chicago House icon Lego's imprint Poontin Muzik of January of 2007. He soon founded his own label, Bad Advice Inc., which concentrates on the techier side of House Music. So far he has been fortunate to work with some of the top talent from around the world, including Derrick Carter, James Curd, Tommy Largo, HeavyFeet, 2007 Ministry Of Sound Mix competition winner Tom Simmons aka Cheap as Chimps (who released his debut EP in 2008 on Bad Advice), former Greenskeeper front man Nick Maurer, Gene Farris, Brian Heath, Angel Alanis, Full Phat, Genna Greene and more. In October of 2009 everything changed as Nate was named the new Music Director for Chicago clubbing institution Smart Bar. Since then he has striven to book a wide range of talented and deserving artists both locally and from around the world and hold the bar high for this highly-esteemed club. Respected luminaries and tomorrow's stars alike have held stage under his tenure already, and a fresh crew of residents and 2 new weekly events are just some of the changes he's made to the program in his short time there so far. And with guest spots one-offs around the city and Midwest as well as regular appearances at Smart Bar, he remains busy as a DJ and regularly enjoys the art. :) And Nate's dedication to the underground has still remained strong as he and the Bears have reached minor celebrity status within the regional Burning Man community. A regular performer at Chicago's yearly 1,200 person-strong Resonate event and Chicago's best underground monthly the Freakeasy, Nate will be heading up a return trip to the Nevada festival this August for a week-long romp in the dust filled with DJ slots across the playa. http://djnatemanic.podomatic.com/ http://www.residentadvisor.net/dj/natemanic https://www.facebook.com/pages/Nate-Manic/129248000426 MERRICK BROWN Merrick Brown has been called many things in his life but boring is not one of them. By day he is a self-taught graphic designer and by night, a bit of a music aficionado. Almost 20 years ago, Merrick stumbled into a rave and was instantly hooked on the loud frenetic beats. His first forays into DJ'ing began in 1994 with techno, jungle and all things rave. Soon after moving to Austin in 1996, he began recording and later releasing records on his own Tektite Recordings and Chalant Music. Both labels have featured an impressive roster of international artists and helped put Texas on the map with a string of timeless underground classics. Merrick was also behind a series of legendary Austin club events, featuring such acts as Jazzanova, John Tejada, Bugz in the Attic, Titonton Duvante, Charles Webster, Recloose, King Britt, and many more, exposing Texas to some fresh sounds. Merrick further refined his DJ skills playing alongside the likes of Derrick May, DJ Surgeon, Matthew Dear, Metro Area, The Hacker.. the list goes on. Merrick played an integral role in the Texas electronic music scene, staying on the cutting edge while remaining rooted in all types of obscure, left-field and influential music of the past. He is known for DJ sets that are energetic and spontaneous, with a freeform style guided by constant crowd interaction. He shuns the purist mindset, choosing instead to weave through genres, playing from his wide-range of musical influences to create something entirely new. His excitement for music comes across when he plays along with a sense of humor that frequently wins over even the most challenging audiences. Merrick continued making his mark on Austin with Get Broke!, the weekly club night at Plush, where he (along with residents Tyler and Wilb) created musical masterpieces out of chaos for almost 5 years. Summer 2007 saw the end of Get Broke! and the start of a new chapter for Merrick and wife Toyacoyah, as they moved to Chicago. At age 35, with over 15 years in the industry, Merrick has no intention of slowing down. With an album in the works and plans to re-launch Tektite, he is poised to capture new audiences and satisfy dancefloors worldwide with a sound that is truly unique. A rhythm? A melody? Chicago-based DJ Duke Shin doesn't have any of those answers for you, but what he does have is a musical arsenal of the loud and strange, gentle and nuanced, mid tempo slow burns and torrid electronic freak outs-all wrapped up in deep house love, driven with a cybernetic techno heart. And his search to answer the question in finding the value of music has lead him to DJing many clubs, bars, lounges and loft parties including favorites like Smart Bar, Primary (home of his current "Refract" residency with Merrick Brown), the Museum of Contemporary Art and the infamous Freakeasy parties in Chicago. Somewhere along the way, Duke has had the good fortune in opening for electronic dance music luminaries like Seth Troxler, Holy Ghost!, Guillaume & the Coutu Dumonts, M.A.N.D.Y., Mark E and Moby, and has enjoyed playing afterparties for bands like the Dandy Warhols, TV On The Radio, Jamie Lidell and Nouvelle Vague. When he's not busy DJing, Duke also enjoys writing as a music journalist, and has had countless features, reviews and interviews published in Resident Advisor, BPM Magazine, New City Chicago (where he previously served as Clubs Editor for over 2 years) and CityPages MN. With an ever-evolving sound, Duke never slows down, continuing his search for musical enlightenment while delighting (and occasionally befuddling) ardent dance floor denizens and lovers of the eclectic mix... http://dukeshin.podomatic.com/ http://www.residentadvisor.net/dj/dukeshin https://soundcloud.com/dukeshin http://www.mixcloud.com/dookle/ https://www.facebook.com/groups/190369167777978/ http://eepurl.com/fdlfs ### REFRACT would like to thank the following artists who shared their talents with us over the last year: DJ Form, Justin Reed, Sassmouth, Adrienne Sanchez, Voices of Black, Derek Specs, Rampa, Monty Luke, Titonton, Tomas Barfod, Terrence Parker, Gun Love, Trickski, Dan Eisenhauer, Sin Label, PARADOX Chicago...
