Is Rome’s Donato Dozzy the most vital person in techno today? He may well be, and plenty of people will tell you that he is. His regard for the history of the music, his vision for its future, his cosmic eccentricity, transcendent, tripped out psychedelic take on techno places him right at the top of Strange Signals and Subsonic’s list, and it’s this reason that we’ve joined forces to bring him to Sydney for a special intimate evening at the Civic Underground, with Sydney's best sound system.
2014 for Dozzy comes after a stellar few years having released two stunning albums in 2013’s “Plays Bee Mask”, a reworking of Chris Madak, aka Bee Mask’s ethereal piece ‘Vaporware’, and of course the 2012 self-titled magnum opus “Voices from the Lake” with long time collaborator Neel. In the middle there’s been a slew of releases on labels such as Concrete, Geophone, Electronique.it, Absurd, Outis and remixes for such visionaries as Morphosis, Ra.H, Peter Van Hoesen, Tin Man and Mike Parker to name a few.
His annual set at Japan’s mystical Labyrinth festival is nothing short of legendary, life affirming experience, his podcasts continue to confuse, bemuse, excite and inspire. He still manages to hold down a frenetic DJ schedule, playing regularly across Europe, Japan and the USA at nights and clubs such as Unit, Bunker, Berghain, Concrete, Fabric and Tresor.
Trippy out techno and psychedelic music of the highest order, those that witnessed Dozzy bend the infamous DSS sound system to his will at the Whitehouse in 2011 know what to expect. But you never really know what to expect. The only way is to come along and witness it for yourself.
Supporting Dozzy on the night is duo Theta State. A rare thing in short attention span Sydney, Theta State will play an extended set, traversing their deep record collections providing you the vessel for where your journey will be just as important as the destination. Comprised of Asger Jorn and James Walsh, this DJ duo have been honing their sound for a number of years, spanning ambient, dub, house, psychedelia and techno. Seeking and sensing every opportunity within the music and crowd, this will not be your regular club set..
