An artist that needs no introduction: FLYING LOTUS. In the years since Steven Ellison attended 2003’s Red Bull Music Academy in Melbourne, his cult following in Australia has grown to epic proportions, sparking a revolution in audio-visual performance with LAYER 3 which debuted here at 2013’s Let Them Eat Cake Festival, now on version 3.0 he’s set to bring a show that’s never seen before to some of Australia’s most iconic venues – Melbourne’s Forum, Sydney Opera House, bespoke festival Golden Plains and a very special performance at one of the most celebrated art spaces in the world: Tasmania’s Museum of Old and New (MONA) in Hobart.
Alongside FLYING LOTUS, we’re excited to announce that Operatives’ favourites KUTMAH in an Australian first, and with a very welcome return of OM UNIT will be sharing the bill.
KUTMAH grew up in Hollywood, California and ultimately made a name for himself as a talented underground artist & DJ. Intrinsic member of eclectic Los Angeles-based music collective ‘Dublab’, in 2004 KUTMAH launched the seminal club ‘Sketchbook’, which forged fundamental foots of the now-infamous LA beat scene. Now, living in London, KUTMAH now holds down a show on NTS Radio and has furthered his reputation as one of the most fearless selectors around as well as a visual artist.
Over the past four years, OM UNIT has established himself as one of the most consistent and original artists in the electronic sphere. Based in London, the producer first made his mark with a reworking of JOKER’s ‘Digi Design’, getting the blessing of KODE9 for a white label treatment. OM UNIT is the alias of Jim Coles. Producing since his early teens, he started with jungle before graduating via the world of turntablism under the 2TALL moniker and representing the UK in the DMC world DJ championships. The moniker OM UNIT means, simply, the spoken essence of a man on a mission.
This international line-up will be joined on the national tour by one of Australia’s most interesting emerging producers: SILENTJAY, a talented multi-instrumentalist who turned his ears towards electronic music when his uncle, a DJ, gave him his record collection. His now carefully composed beats are a natural blend of organic shoegaze, soul and hip-hop. With Operatives’ founders and veterans JPS and NAM on DJ duties, this globetrotting line up will simply unmissable.
