Denovali Swingfest London 2014: Day 1

  • Village Underground is a multi-purpose space for creativity and culture in the heart of East London, part creative community, part arts venue and has opened its doors in 2007. The main Village Underground centre is housed in a renovated turn-of-the-century warehouse primed for everything from concerts and club nights to exhibitions, theatre, live art and other performances. High above Great Eastern Street, atop the venue, four recycled Jubilee line train carriages and shipping containers make up the creative studios of Village Underground. Music-wise, indie, electronic, experimental, hip-hop and much more besides could potentially feature on any given night at Village Underground. Porter Ricks (GER) Sound project and live performance by German producers Thomas Köner & Andy Mellwig. The name Porter Ricks is based on character from the TV series "Flipper". "The nautical view evokes a clear vision, something freeing. The club as a diving platform, and techno as a nautical sound experience, a project that lies between clubs and art." "Many of these ideas have permeated so deeply into the culture that it's hard to remember a time without them, but we wouldn't have Burial, to name just one of the duo's distant descendants, without Porter Ricks' seafloor crackle and mottled-granite color scale." It's not a place in which to seek refuge from life's ills, but rather one in which you can satisfy a perverse need to draw them in closer.“ (Pitchfork) Listen: www.soundcloud.com/tri_angle_records/the-haxan-cloak-the-mirror Anna von Hausswolff (SWE) "It feels big, the way the Cure's "Plainsong" or Zola Jesus' Conatus felt." (Pitchfork) Listen: www.annavonhausswolff.com Hidden Orchestra (UK) + Lumen (UK) (special AV concert) Special AV concert with a video installation by Lumen Cinematic soundscapes with a big sound and wonderful string arrangements; 2 drummers + piano + bass + violin Listen: www.denovali.com/hiddenorchestra Ulrich Schnauss (GER) One of the most fascinating ambient+electronica producers of today Listen: www.soundcloud.com/ulrich-schnauss Witxes (FRA) Roaming, roving and raving were giving birth to melodic spaces fed on colourful sound layers, shimmering textures and residual traces of sonic instants Listen: www.denovali.com/witxes John Lemke (GER) Using all kinds of interesting methods of sound design, Lemke fused a myriad of ideas and atmospheres into a unique whole that is stimulating, elegant, and edgy just in the right places. This is refreshing music. One of the very best of 2013, no doubt. (Igloomag) Listen: www.denovali.com/johnlemke Since 2007 Denovali Records curates and organizes an international music festival called Denovali Swingfest. The first editions took place in Essen, Germany - since 2013 Denovali presents similar events in London and Berlin. The name Swingfest is an homage to the Swing Kids being active during the Nazi dictatorship. Focussed on various forms of experimental and adventurous music the lineup offers a wonderful opportunity to discover a wide range of international Denovali artists live and is rounded off by various renowned non-label guest artists. A hallmark of the festival is the renunciation of the headliner principle: all artists are receiving the same attention - the length of each artist's concert is equal. In addition to the musical program the festival features yearly changing specials like an experimental film cinema, installations or lectures. Not limited to one musical genre, the festival offers a diverse range of music styles from darker experimental sounds, ambient, electronica to indie, jazz or piano and string driven modern compositions. As always the sets of the 11 performings artists will be as long as a real club show (around an hour). In the past years artists like Sunn O))), William Basinski, Murcof, Andy Stott, Fennesz, Tim Hecker, Hauschka, Biosphere, Emika, Barn Owl, Nils Frahm, Floex, Ulrich Schnauss, Hidden Orchestra, The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble, Bohren und der Club Of Gore, Bersarin Quartett or Nadja performed at the festival. - 28£ for a Friday ticket - 18£ for a Saturday ticket (limited to 200) - 46£ for a festival ticket
