S.A.S.H Respect

  • Over the last four decades, through a combination of funk, soul and disco, house music began to spread across the Atlantic from Detroit and NY to the UK where a scene and culture behind it quickly flourished. It’s around this point in the 80’s, Australia turned to look at The Motherland for an acoustic guide. House music in Australia was born. In these thirty odd years trends and fashions have come and gone with only a handful of truly talented artists and a select number of events managing to stand alone amongst the sea of watered down beats and kitsch music affairs. This week we pay RESPECT to those who have done just that.. and in their own way shaped Sydney's scene to what is today. Gathered is a list of local legends, who, some of you folk that have been around the traps once or twice will recognise with fond memories representing the best venues and parties Sydney had to offer, from the premiere Sunday event prior to the birth of S*A*S*H, Sounds on Sunday to KiNK, Afterhours, Sublime and Sweet Chilli to name a few. Hats off to them ! This week, S*A*S*H plays host to: Ben Korbel & Declan Lee Two gentlemen, who after our own hearts, piloted Sydney’s best Sunday events at the beautiful sandstone outdoor venue of The Greenwood for the famous “Sounds On Sunday” parties as well as their “We Love.. Sounds” festival. Giving light to Sunday’s as a highlight of the partying week with the focus on warm beats in a beautiful venue and just another reason to hate Mondays and doing so successfully for over TEN years ! Ben Morris One of driving factors behind KiNK’s success, his trademark sound is infectious, yet definitely impossible to pigeon hole. He is constantly called upon as the go to person to support heavy hitting international artists, while playing through the long list of Sydney venues from Boiler Rooms to the biggest festivals. Shamus One of the few Australian DJ’s who can honestly claim to have taken the Australian club scene by storm. Holding down residencies at KiNK (Arthouse), Sounds on Sunday (Greenwood), Sublime (Home), Ear Candy and Sounds on Sunday’s After Hours (YU – now SOHO, again) just as a testimonial to his ability to comfortably envelope the crowd on several days, styles, venues and moods. Tim Culbert Co founder of ‘Thug Records’, responsible for countless releases across numerous platforms Tim began playing Sydney’s traps before becoming regular at the infamous Sweet Chilli and Subservice digs including monthly slots at Home. Along with dear friend and longstanding Sydney legend, Robbie Lowe, the two released a massively successful 4 disk mix serious entitled ‘Colour’, growing hugely in popularity and to rave reviews. Supper Set Now running from 9pm till 12am encompassing that slo-mo stripped back house amongst the smell of the chesterfield lounges. Tim Sea Best described in the quote “When T hits the room, expect the best, a wild party, a stolen kiss, a missing show; an all round sweaty hedonistic ass-shaking affair”. Supporting a who’s who of international acts the length of a toilet paper roll, playing every party and venue worth its salt across Australia that’s far too long to list in this space Tim’s certainly left a massive boot print in Sydney’s music scene. Lunch Set Pull up a seat under the sprinklers and order yourself a $5 pizza while enjoying a $10 jug of beer or $15 jug of cider to one of Sydney’s standout acts from 12 till 4 in the afternoon Simon Caldwell In a career spanning almost 25 years few people have had such a continued impact on Sydney’s sound scape, as much as much as Simon has. From techno to hip hop, disco to future beats and from radio shows to co-running one of Sydney’s oldest parties – Mad Racket there is very little Simon hasn’t left his mark on.
