Industry of Machines & Ad Hoc present: Traxx, Powell & Torn Hawk

  • Traxx (Nation | Chicago) Powell NY Debut (Diagonal | Liberation Technologies | London) Torn Hawk Live PA (L.I.E.S. | Valcrond Video | Brooklyn) Head of the the Nation label, prime purveyor of the Jakbeat sound, half of Mutant Beat Dance alongside Beau Wanzer, half of Saturn V with JTC,1/3rd of X2 with DMC+JTC and one of the main movers behind the renaissance of Jakbeat exploration with music from many different realms of sound, Traxx is a notorious figure on the electronic, house, and new wave/nu-beat circuit whose production discography stretches to 2006. Even more importantly, he has been a vinyl deknician since the late 80's with a personality that always precedes him. His ferocious dek sessions and outspoken criticisms of his peers line up squarely with the uncompromising music released by his label, and as time has worn on his influence has only increased, as seen by the growth of labels like L.I.E.S., whose debt to Nation is explicit and eagerly admitted to by the participants. Often mentioned alongside such warriors as D'Marc Cantu and JTC, expect Traxx's spiritual, over-the-top style to transport the unwary and experienced alike to new realms of rawness. Powell and his outstanding Diagonal label are relatively new arrivals on the electronic music scene, but if early notice adds up to anything the future looks bright for this young Englishman. His minimal, heavily industrial music sidesteps easy genre classifications but stands out for impact, and he's been remixed by Regis and supplied his own reshape to Silent Servant's most recent solo EP. That's high marks for someone with a discography as thin as his, but his Diagonal label has been similarly incisive with releases from American talents like Prostitutes, Shit And Shine, and NYC legends Death Comet Crew all turning heads. Expect a heavy dose of rugged and genre bending DJ styles when he takes the stage, for Powell's sets take no prisoners. Initially attracting notice as the odd psych-rock leaning electronic artist on the L.I.E.S. label, the music of Torn Hawk has steadily evolved into an altogether more complex and less classifiable amalgam of guitar, drum machines, lo-fi electronics, and conceptual artistic ideas that stands out even on the imprint's roster. The man also known as Luke Wyatt has more recently emerged to greater recognition and acclaim, and he also is well known in Brooklyn as a video artist whose own work figures strongly in his all-too-uncommon live appearances. His second appearance for Industry of Machines comes certainly more hotly touted than his memorable first, and it is always with pride that we welcome artists back to the stage to solidify their gains.
