Hessle Audio has become the little label that could - breaking down boundaries between British genres such as dubstep and grime, and a wider array of house, techno and experimental sounds from across the globe.
Today’s dancefloors have become spaces where genres collide, and Hessle Audio co-founders Ben UFO, Pearson Sound and Pangaea have been instrumental in that shift. On the label’s releases and in their acclaimed DJ sets, the Hessle guys have created new rhythmic tensions by blending tracks from across time and space.
Hessle Audio was formed in 2007 during the exploding dubstep scene, and quickly became one of the main players in the British bass movement. As that scene ebbed and flowed, the co-founders’ musical scope broadened to include everything from techno and glitchy house to hardcore and leftfield experimental beats, and all three co-founders have released separate Fabriclive compilations charting this new direction.
Now for the first time in Southeast Asia, PUSH are bringing the co-founders of Hessle Audio together for an event that will showcase the different facets of this influential and groundbreaking label.
BEN UFO
Ben is one of the few top global DJs to have made an impact without releasing a single record of his own – his reputation is solely the result of his skills behind the decks. He was the first DJ to play material by producers such as Blawan and Joy Orbison, both now scene figureheads, and his biweekly slot on London’s leading ex-pirate radio station, RinseFM, was considered to be one of the only places to hear the most exclusive new music. In 2013 he was placed No 10 on the Resident Advisor poll of the world’s top 100 DJs. It’s a result which reflects Ben UFO’s ability to successfully present unfamiliar, experimental dance music to a diverse variety of audiences worldwide.
PEARSON SOUND
Pearson Sound, another Hessle co-founder who refuses to sit still or be easily categorised, originally performed under the name Ramadanman, one of the leading lights of the UK dubstep movement. His output as Ramadanman may have ceased, but his subsequent work as Pearson Sound and as "Chicago house legend” Maurice Donovan commands much the same level of gravitas. While his latest productions feed more from the classic notions of 4×4 dancefloor music, his sets retain every inch the precision as before and his selection is spreading out even further.
PANGAEA
Pangaea is one of the key producers and DJs working in forward-thinking dance music today. Although he made music from an early age, Pangaea was inspired to step up his productions after being exposed to the then-emerging sounds of dubstep in 2005 and co-founded Hessle two years later. Another seven years on, Pangaea’s sound is hard to categorise and ever-shifting. While house and techno influences are apparent, his music is firmly rooted in the traditions of UK bass music past and present. The same applies to his DJ sets – check out a perfect example such as his Fabriclive disc released in January this year.
