Machine... March ... Dot Matrix
Once upon a time linear stabs of ink in linear arrangements on paper were the pinnacle of digital reproduction. Perforated concertinas revelling in the dot matrix. Fast forward to a world of digital imaging and hyper real reproduction. The line between original and analogue becomes vague; the analogue is invested with qualities that seem even more original, until the reproduction becomes the realisation of what the original only hinted at.
Reproduction then, is not limited to mimicry; it redefines the original and asks where to next?
Machine, March Dot Matrix is our realisation of this in music. Right now dance based electronic music culture is in the throws of it's most intense burst of self reflection and examination since it's inception. Not only is the medium of delivery exploding out into myriad possibilities, so too is the very meaning of previously defined and locked down artistic definitions.
Mirroring the dot matrix principal of metamorphosis of original into analogue into the "new" original; the producer is now the dj is now the producer of the previously finished product into a new finished product made possible by a host of new technologies and tools.
In an industry that is awkwardly pondering who and what it is, the once secure notion of an "industry standard" has dissolved into a sea of options clamouring for relevance. For evidence of this you need look no further than the front of house dj console. Once defined by the presence of turntables and a mixer, this area is now the encapsulation of an art form having an identitlty crisis. Machines, wires, computers, play back devices so powerful and diverse that they become production tools, capable of exporting a new original. In real time. What file type, what bit rate, what format, digital, analogue, who's converting to who, device chains, computer, controller. It all begs the question.
This is the world of Machine. It is going on right now. Our artists cover the gamut. We are putting to bed the insidiously self conscious question of "which format is better". And asking another one: Does the audience still matter?
The alternative: the very real possibility of a Techno circle jerk, that, in it's quest to be the "new" standard of the "new industry", has forgotten the point behind it's very existence. To create, so to inspire, to make your body move.
This month we bring you Backroom Reality, Gene Hoffmann, Dj Kiti, Andrew Till and Simon Slieker expounding their chosen medium, with the aim of giving it to the dance floor; not losing it in the machine. May the new original become itself once more.
