  • Spring is always a season to surprise, so for Industry of Machine’s return to Baby’s All Right in the beginning of May, we decided to do a few unusual things. There are a number of artists and scenes that have not really received their due in New York in spite of a keen presence on the worldwide electronic music scene, and when we think of a short list, the UK’s resurgent techno scene and Paris’ reborn contributions to techno arrive quite high on the list. That’s not to diminish Cleveland, Ohio either; Spectrum Spools is a label on the tip of many tongues recently, and as one of the city’s stalwart experimental musicians, Jimmy Donadio’s Prostitutes project is in our minds overdue for the recognition it is now receiving. Of all of the many oversights in New York techno nights, Truss’ name stands out tall as an artist who Industry of Machines is proud to offer a spotlight to. It’s not his first time here, and in fact his collaborations with NYC techno talent Donor did make some noise not even long ago, but over the last few years Tom Russell has emerged onto his own momentum and sound as one of the most vital artists in contemporary techno. We’re honestly more addicted to the productions he released on Our Circula Sound under his Truss banner, but it was his MPIA3 records, released by Avian and R&S, that really made the most noise and landed him spots remixing Depeche Mode and others. Collaborations with Perc certainly didn’t hurt either, and he has recently been spotted under the TR + ER guise alongside his brother Tessela getting out the grotty, breaky stuff for the ravers. Tom’s techno is deceptively simple but deadly effective, and he carries the torch of hard, industrial, raved-out and direct music proudly in the true spirit of UK dance heritage. His MPIA3 material is even more elementary and deranged; more an art project than a proper alias, it took distorted, banging acid techno to new levels of intensity. From our listening his sets can get pretty wild, so expect Truss to bring damage to the dance floor when he lands in Brooklyn for Industry of Machines. Prostitutes may only recently have brought Jimmy Donadio to worldwide notice, but as a matter of fact the Clevelander has been at it for ages in various projects and is a longtime associate of the Spectrum Spools crew, who are releasing his new album in May. He’s not hurting for drops on prestigious labels recently either; Avian sublabel Mira gave him a weighty double 10 inch, Powell’s Diagonal stepped up just before that, and previous efforts emerged in the form of an album for Digitalis and a split full-length on Opal Tapes with Basic House. For decades before that Donadio was involved in Cleveland’s legendary art rock circuit as a member of Speaker/Cranker and Flat Can Co., and his early Prostitutes material as well as other records emerged on his own Stabudown imprint. Prostitutes is the product of his longtime interest in techno, industrial, and other electronic music, so new appearances aside this is actually the work of a veteran craftsman, which makes it less of a surprise considering how suddenly he stormed onto the scene. He’ll be bringing a ruthless live PA for the evening’s centerpiece, and Industry of Machines could hardly be more excited to see what happens when Donadio steps up to tear down Baby’s All Right. Of all recent resurgences in dance music, perhaps the Paris techno rebirth is the most surprising. Concrete may be the biggest name for the Anglophones so far, but its notoriety has actually done something to mask a much more general upsurge in high-quality techno talent bursting from the City of Light. We’re not hard pressed to pick highlights after already booking one of the best – Polar Inertia – but Mondkopf and his In Paradisium crew certainly stand out as names to watch from a scene that’s certain to make much more noise moving forwards. Though mostly limited to French labels thus far, he attracted attention from the always-incisive Perc Trax for his last 12-inch, and his In Paradisium cohort Low Jack has been spotted with an album on L.I.E.S., which makes the formerly NYC-based label one of the top sources for this emerging French sound after already handling a 12-inch from Voiski. Not too shockingly for a city with the cultural depth of the French capital, the music that is emerging from it is distinct from other forms of European techno and embraces a full-bodied experimentalism that is doing the young scene proud. Industry of Machines is pleased to offer the stage to yet another artist whose long years of work are finally gaining him well-deserved recognition.
