Industry of Machines presents: Brendon Moeller, Clay Wilson, Certain Creatures

  • Industry of Machines presents Styles Upon Styles: Brendon Moeller LIVE/DJ (Prologue | Echocord | Styles Upon Styles || New York) Clay Wilson LIVE/DJ (The Bunker NYC | Styles Upon Styles || NYC) Certain Creatures LIVE (Styles Upon Styles || NYC) Gut Nose LIVE (Styles Upon Styles || Queens) If there is one peculiarity of New York’s growing underground electronic scene that is noticeable across a vast swath of artists and labels, it is that, very often, things get noticed from the outside first and only belatedly rise to local attention. Such was certainly the fate of many of the L.I.E.S. crew and White Material, who both exploded abroad before finally returning to busier nights at home. It is also certainly the case for Styles Upon Styles and their Bangers & Ash sublabel, who have since day one been earning note in the international music press for their challenging releases, but who for the most part remain under-recognized at home in spite of a list of talent – Ike Yard, Samuel Kerridge, Brendon Moeller, Jahiliyya Fields – who have already risen to worldwide acclaim. As with Plan B Recordings, Industry of Machines is working hard to correct some of these oversights, so for our May monthly at Bossa Nova Civic Club we’re bringing SUS to Bushwick for a full night of live electronic explorations. Brendon Moeller is one of New York’s hardest working techno and house producers, whose bewildering slew of records serves to deter the idly curious. That’s nothing to say about the quality of his music though: his resume includes multiple releases on many of the most prestigious contemporary techno labels, and making a short list that would include names like Prologue, Echocord, Electric Deluxe, echospace [detroit], Mule Electronic, and Third Ear is really just scratching the surface. Brendon began his tenure in New York with a long stint as a resident at Deep Space, and his Beat Pharmacy project released a series of albums on the associated Deep Space Media imprint. He also helms his own Steadfast label, which has proven to have a prescient eye for upcoming producers. In recent years he has been on the forefront of the emerging live, improvised techno movement, and his music has reached new depths of hardness and nastiness as his arsenal of analogue equipment has grown. This is reflected in his recent drops for DJ Spider’s filth-encrusted Plan B Recordings, but he’s also appeared on Fred P’s Soul People Music and now on Styles Upon Styles, which gave IofM an unnecessary excuse to bring him to burn down Bossa Nova Civic Club with his scorching live set. Another good early look for the BASH sublabel, Clay Wilson has emerged over the last year as a talent to watch in New York’s growing electronic music scene, so much so that when The Bunker at long last launched their eponymous label it rushed to release Clay’s second EP as its second release. There’s not really much mystery as to why he’s rising: Wilson’s techno has a musical touch that is lacking in some of the more strictly functional tracks his peers are producing. Much of this certainly has to do with his background in conservatory studying improvisation and playing bass, a rare distinction in the techno world that is reflected in the attention his tracks give to arrangement, composition, texture, and production detail. Industry of Machines is pleased to welcome Clay to Bossa Nova Civic Club to make his live debut in this particular location, and alongside Brendon he’ll be warming up the floor with choice cuts drawn from his DJ bag. Certain Creatures is the newest project from Oliver Chapoy, a musician who originally hailed from Miami but now resides in Brooklyn. Chapoy has a long and complex musical history as a member of Shai Hulud, the legendary Florida hardcore and metal group from which he departed to join the post-rock band Saxon Shore. His list of musical projects is really too long to fully name, as are his roles within these projects, and it suffices to say that Chapoy is a musician of great depth and experience who has thoroughly explored many creative avenues. His Certain Creatures project is the most contemporary expression of his long musical past, and amidst the outpouring of analogue experiments in industrial and techno, the project easily stands out for quality and has earned him collaborations with Ike Yard and remixes from Jahiliyya Fields and rising Downwards star Samuel Kerridge. We’re proud to finally have him for a live set, an event that had been long discussed and has satisfyingly come to fruition, so that he can deploy his interesting and high-impact sound to maximum effect. Being the dark horse on a lineup like this is a difficult role, but with the track record SUS has put down for finding new talent, we have no reason to expect anything less than strong impressions from Gut Nose, a Queens-based producer who is making his debut on the label. As a matter of fact, Industry of Machines has actually seen him play at one of the label’s events this past winter, and we were suitably startled enough that we took a few notes concerning tapping him for future performances. That opportunity came sooner than expected once we learned of his record for Styles Upon Styles, and this evening will serve as the release party for this newest project and EP from an emerging New York artist.
