Away with Mike Shannon & The Mole

  • The reowned berlin party series makes its premiere at off sonar. Distinguishing its self in the past with lineups featuring artists like Derrick May, Kenny Larkin, DJ Koze or John Digweed, the Away crew set sail for Barcelona. Delivering the one-of-a-kind vibe to Spains beautiful hotspot and bringing two fresh virtuosos along with them. Any historian who takes it upon themselves to pen the tale of Canadian electronic in the years to come will most certainly find the name Mike Shannon figures early and often in it’s telling. From his humble beginnings in the sleepy suburban town of Kitchener Ontario, the last 15 years have seen him become an internationally lauded producer with albums on 3 of the industry’s most respected labels (Plus 8, Force Inc, ~Scape), as well as a steady stream of consistently charted singles and remixes. A true “DJ’s DJ”, he has won legions of fans and the respect of his peers alike for his deep crates and lightning fast mixing skills. And while some may suggest he has gravitated towards smoother, deeper selections as the years go by, those in the know will tell you he has few equals when it comes to whipping dance floors into a relentless techno frenzy should you catch him on a night with that mischievous twinkle in his eye. Dance music fans in Victoria and Vancouver in the 90s heard a lot of The Mole in his infancy. His mentors, believing he had a natural talent, pushed him from his DJ beginnings into music production. This natural talent was, in reality, mountains of hard work consummated in secret not unlike the rigorous discipline kung fu students undertake in those wonderful bamboo forests. For The Mole though this retreat took the form of long winters in the French and arguably the cultural capital of Canada, Montreal. Long, cold winters indeed. Urb magazine named him one of the ‘next 100’ in 2004. His live set at MUTEK 2004 was one of the top ten in the Village Voice Critics’ Poll 2004, followed by 2005’s collaboration with long time friend and band mate Mathew Jonson ‘Dirt Road and a Boat From Soundwave’ on Kompakt’s Speicher was received with critical acclaim. As were his releases that year on Philpot, Musique Risquée and Revolver. 2005 also saw the reunion of the Modern Deep Left Quartet on Wagon Repair, probably the greatest source of pride for the molito to date. The ceremony begins at 10 pm and spiritual support will be appropriated by the AWAY residents Andreas Horn & Szymon and Lutz Markwirth. And this is only the first part!
