Once upon a time, about a century ago, in a thriving land a continent away, politicians and bureaucrats sought to impose draconian regulations upon its people - over-regulating and imposing on their most elemental human rights. No longer was there a choice to socialize, live the life you wish and choose what you put into your own body.
Of course, human nature reacts to repression with rebellion and protest, and it can come in many guises. From the depths of the prohibition cramp, establishments began appearing in neighbourhoods that, in secret, rebelled to these ludicrous restrictions. Contained in these walls was an underground hive of souls that refused to abide. This type of establishment became colloquially known as the ‘Speakeasy.’
Fast-forward to 2014, and Sydney faces its own misguided tyrants trying to encroach upon its citizens' civil liberties for all the wrong reasons, leaving us longing for our own slice of the city free from all of the imposed regulations, where our friends and all other like minded individuals can enjoy their nights the way they should be.
So a couple of crews with similar vision - Charades and EK - have set out to create that exact environment. Quality is big on the agenda, a real underground basement club is a must, as is a lush and powerful sound through unique lineups. In the spirit of objection to mindless red tape and over-regulation, we decided there was no better name for such a party than Speakeasy.
Speakeasy's home, nestled in cosy Erskineville, doesn’t look like the place a hedonistic night long basement club might reside. Venture downstairs, though, and you’ll see a different picture. Each month we’ll be showcasing what we feel are the most rateable house and techno acts both locally and from abroad, and come 3 am, we keep the party going, and going... and going. Perhaps the best part of all, get locked out of a venue after 1:30 in the city or Kings Cross, and it’s a just 10 minute cab ride to be greeted with open arms and full glasses for a full morning's clubbing.
