Bathroom Culture presents Dinamo Azari & Morgan Geist

  • DINAMO AZARI (Azari & III) •Toronto Deep inside the recesses of a sprawling, 19th century warehouse complex in Toronto's gritty-west end neighbourhood, an urgently driving bass line echoes through a maze of darkness. If you know which unmarked door to open and which dark staircase to climb, you'll hear the relentless pounding getting louder and the eerie melodies coming clearer into focus. 5AM, Dinamo Azari is playing a menacing yet oddly beautiful melody on one of the many pounding speakers scattered around the cluttered dimly lit room, completely lost in the moment. Previously achieving monumental success with his band AZARI & III, as the huge buzz that's been generated by their early singles Hungry For The Power & Reckless (With Your Love) has kept him in constant demand in clubs and festivals worldwide. Transcending genres and scenes, with high profile fans ranging from Annie Mac to Grizzly Bear, Boys Noize to Madonna. Collaborated with UK blowups Friendly Fires, as well as Basement Jaxx and Sal P from (Liquid Liquid). Remix work for Robyn, Cut Copy, Booka Shade & Creep (Romy of the XX). Azari has recently put together a mix for Get Physical's infamous Body Language DJ compilation series & Remixed the likes of Hercules & Love Affair, Austra, Chk Chk Chk !!! + Astrud Gilberto for Verve remixed. With over 20 years of record digging & dj chops under his belt, Azari has been winning crowds all over the globe with his relentless DJ sets championing that warehouse sound, Azari has been known for. As a child, weekdays with his mother were scored by standards and musicals, weekends with his father by modern jazz, classical and experimental pop. His older sister played Devo, Rick James and B-52s cassettes and his older brother played Pink Floyd and Yes LPs. Even the family babysitter was a musician and often brought over Roland synthesizer brochures, their pages adorned with exotically-named, futuristic-looking synthesizers that captured the imagination: Jupiter, Juno, Planet S. The seeds of obsession sown, the idea of acquiring one of these fascinating instruments increasingly occupied Geist’s young mind. He distracted himself by making tapes of groups like UTFO and Whodini off of New York radio stations and borrowing scarce Depeche Mode and New Order imports from a European friend at school. Finally, his dream came true in the form of a four-track tape recorder, a primitive sequencer and a synthesizer (not surprisingly, a Roland) at age 15. After high school, Geist left the East coast for Oberlin College in Ohio. Initially inspired by England’s take on techno in the form of 808 State, LFO, ART and Black Dog Productions, his newfound proximity to Detroit allowed him to track the genre back to its Motor City innovators such as Derrick May, Carl Craig and Underground Resistance. This, in turn, inspired many trips to Detroit to buy records to play on his college radio shows. A chance friendship with techno innovator Dan Curtin led to Geist’s 1994 debut 12” on Metamorphic Records, produced entirely on a minimal setup in his dormitory room. Geist formed his own Environ label in 1995, releasing powerful statements of purpose that displayed his affinity for the more emotive strains of techno, house and experimental electronic music. DJing and digging for sampling material in used record stores led to an obsession with boogie and disco, cementing a link between his productions and forgotten, classic tracks from the New York City radio of his youth. Geist’s debut album, The Driving Memoirs, released in 1997, was an amalgam of disco, techno and electronic listening music. Soon after its release, neo-disco pioneer Daniel Wang (Balihu) joined the Environ roster and Geist began working with Darshan Jesrani on what would become the first Metro Area. After four years of singles, Metro Area’s eponymous 2002 debut album earned inclusion in Rolling Stone’s Top 50 Albums of the Year (ten years later, the lead single “Miura” would be voted Resident Advisor’s #1 Song of the Decade). Geist’s own solo EPs of the era (Super, Moves) bridged the gap between his earlier Detroit-oriented releases and Metro Area. Today, Metro Area is still cited as a project that helped spearhead a sea change in the direction of underground dance music. Almost 20 years before “Get Lucky,” Metro Area (along with Wang, DJ Harvey, Idjut Boys and others) reimagined disco and boogie for a new generation. In 2010, Geist decided he wanted to return to his electronic roots and created a new alias: Storm Queen. The debut single "Look Right Through" was released on Environ in 2010, followed up by 2011’s "It Goes On" and 2012’s "Let's Make Mistakes.” On November 3, 2013, a licensed version of "Look Right Through" (remixed by Mark Kinchen) was released via Defected Records/Ministry of Sound. In the United Kingdom, the song entered at the top of the UK Singles Chart on November 10, 2013, becoming Storm Queen's first number one song in The UK, dethroning Eminem and Rihanna's "The Monster" from the top of the chart. Today, Geist continues to run Environ, releasing his own material alongside like-minded artists such as Kelley Polar, Daniel Wang and Baby Oliver. A highly regarded remixer, Geist has lent his touch to a wide range of artists including jazz greats like Hugh Masekela and Phil Ranelin, synth heroes including Telex and Patrick Cowley, and pop darlings such as Franz Ferdinand, The Rapture, Junior Boys and Hercules & Love Affair. In addition to production, Geist tours internationally both as a DJ (his 2003 mix CD and 12” series, Unclassics, is regarded as essential listening to those uninitiated to the world of obscure electronic disco) and to perform live (as Metro Area, with Darshan Jesrani). http://www.environrecords.com/ http://www.residentadvisor.net/dj/morgangeist http://www.facebook.com/morgangeist1 SCOTT ZACHARIAS (Macho City, Secret Mixes & Fixes) •Detroit, America The co-founder of both Detroit's Macho City and Disco/Secret with Mike Trombley, and the original resident of Oslo. He started drumming in thrash-metal bands as a teen then moved on to space rock project Monaural. Before he knew it he had become a dj and was a "lifer" hooked on vinyl, playing "headsy", funky and trippy at many legendary Detroit underground parties (starting in the 90's). He has evolved into one of Detroit's best kept secrets, this guy will not just make the party pop, he does it with a savage-like-finesse that is truly unparalleled.
