Being dubbed classical music’s next prodigal son might sound like a heavy load to us ordinary mortals, but Francesco Tristano carries it on his slight shoulders with the most amazing grace. A graduate of New York’s prestigious Juilliard School, this Luxembourgian now residing in Barcelona has recorded several albums with compositions from Bach, Ravel and Prokofiev amongst others. It’s his insatiable appetite for discovery and unique feeling for dancefloor sensibilities though, that have made him a staple among music connoisseurs and the undisputed go-to pianist for experimental projects from the hotbeds of club and high culture. After releasing his cover versions of rave classics from Autechre, Jeff Mills and Derrick May on InFiné (the respected indie label founded by French techno producer extraordinaire Agoria) in 2007, he has moved on to work with the likes of Carl Craig and Moritz von Oswald, constantly turning heads and pushing boundaries of neo-classical and electronic music for a post-digital age. Rhythim is rhythim, music is music, and it would definitely sound different without Tristano.
