Across 110th Street

  • “You don't know what you'll do until you're put under pressure, Across 110th Street is a hell of a tester” There are many factors that go into choosing a name for a club night. Back in 1998, like many clubs before and since, we decided to name our party after a song. When we first began throwing parties in the Town Hall, the music policy was pretty much funk, soul, Latin, boogaloo & disco, which was the kind of soundtrack we imagined one would hear on the ghettoblasters of Harlem back in the day. Once you crossed 110th Street, you were in Harlem and it was these sounds, most especially those from the seventies, that first beguiled us and soundtracked our wig-outs. And it was Bobby Womack, recently deceased, who sang the song that inspired us to pull up our bumpers to those double yellow lines and announce ourselves as ‘110th Street’ to the hedonists of the west of Ireland. If it were not for this man and his timeless jam, we may well have chosen a much more banal name for our club night. We will make sure that the steam is rising from the tarmac in your memory on Friday 11th, Mr Womack. Peace out from Gaillimh xx
