  • On Thursday May 26, Fabric hosts a special presentation of Sónar 2005, in collaboration with the festival’s main sponsor, San Miguel. ‘A Taste of Sonar’ previews some of Sónar 2005’s new trends, and features artists performing at the festival three weeks later (June 16, 17, 18). For the third year in succession, Sónar presents an introductory event in London for all true followers of the festival. The party will take place in all three rooms of the venue with each featuring exclusive visuals. Official Sónar Artist Information: Chris Coco: Chris Coco, guru of quality chill out and priest of British radio with his programme Blue Room at BBC1, knows the tricks of his trade like the back of his hand. He displays them in sessions in which soaring ambient and deep house coexist with sharp techno and contemporary funk. They call it class. The Durutti Column: Key group of the Manchester-based label Factory, The Durutti Column has for 25 years been a vehicle for guitar player Vini Reilly to express himself. Reilly’s unique sound is as valid today as it was in the early 80’s, and his new record, “Tempus Fugit”, confirms him as a magician of the six strings. The Beautiful People: Hardly three years have passed since The Beautiful People formed in Kristiansund, Norway, and already they’ve captivated the public with two EPs with sounds that echo Joy Division guitars, Kraftwerk synthesizers and memories of the most rowdy new wave. Mu: MU is in the middle of a world tour with its hit “Paris Hilton” and album “Out of Breach”. Maurice Fulton, house producer and one half of the project, describes their invention as punk music you can dance to. Mutsumi Kanamori, performer and second half of the project, provides the glamour. Disco-punk at its most chic. Miss Kittin: Thanks to huge hits such as “Frank Sinatra” and “1982”, Miss Kittin is the anointed queen of half of Europe’s dance floors and a visible face of the “electroclash moment”. Kittin is also one of the continent’s best DJs, with ample strength, audacity and knowledge. François K: This French DJ’s forays at the turntable are always synonymous with passion for rhythm and connection with the public, qualities indisputably captured on his cd-mix “Live at Sonar”, released by SonarMusic. This time he trades records for machines in an exclusive live set for the event. Simon Russell plays Rough Trade Shops: Simon Russell is one of the music lovers you can find behind the counter at Rough Trade’s store located on Talbot Road. This means that the best records of the world fall into his hands everyday: selector of authentic luxury. Hot Chip: “Coming On Strong”, his debut album for Moshi Moshi, has been lauded by the UK’s specialised press due to the freshness of a sound that naturally combines accurate beats, seductive voices and delicious pop arrangements. Jamie Lidell: Lidell is one half of the respected Super_Collider and a compulsive experimenter when performing solo. He is an eccentric and accurate corruptor of sounds, dressed up with the elegance of a contemporary crooner. His latest madness: a perfect soul album edited by Warp to be released in early June. Sólo Los Solo: Juan Solo and Griffi are without a doubt touchstones of Spanish hip hop. Owners of their own style, they have set the highest standards from their earliest work up to their latest project, the recently released “Todo el Mundo lo sabe”. Iberian luxury. Mark One + Virus Syndicate: Grime is the sound of the moment, and Mark One is one of its brightest stars. His acclaimed debut, “One Way”, includes many collaborations and innovative beats. He will be accompanied by various members of his Manchester crew, Virus Syndicate. Russell Haswell: Haswell is an institution on the Old World experimental scene: tightrope walker to the extreme, oppressor of electronics, and insatiable searcher of beauty through sound, with a handful of records on labels as exquisite as Mego or Warp. Mental Overdrive: Coming from Norway, Per Martinsen has been launching records of various sorts on some of the most interesting European labels of the last five years. The latest, “083”, is an exercise in synthetic warmth and unpredictable rhythm, and was released this year by Smalltown Supersound. Circus Company: Sety dj + Nôze live: One of the most solid exponents of the new French Wave is the label Company Circus. Intuitive, playful techno which in the hands of the quartet Nôze, led by the label’s boss, Freak, moves closer to the free instrumentation of jazz. Sety, the official dj of Circus, will round off a techno set that goes directly to the soul. Undo & Vicknoise: Undo & Vicknoise work as producers (maxis in the label Factor City) as well as in the most important booths on the continent (residence at The Loft included). Right now they are two of the most solid musicians of dance electronic music made in Spain. At Fabric: together, mixed and with four turntables at their disposal.
