Red Bull Music Academy teams up with Liquidroom for its 10th anniversary, inviting the high priest of Detroit house, Theo Parrish to Tokyo to perform with his new live band, featuring Amp Fiddler, Akwasi Mensah, Duminie DePorres and Myele Manzanza.
"The love of music should be the driving force for any producer, performer or DJ.” Theo Parrish is in this game for all the right reasons. The Chicago-raised Detroit resident is the legitimate heir and conscience of a DJ school that stems from ancestors like Ron Hardy, Frankie Knuckles and Andre Hatchett, radio shows on WBMX and clubs like the Music Box. As anyone who has experienced a Theo Parrish set can testify, the work of this consummate architect of sound envelopes the listener, and transmits new perspectives on club sonics. Maltreating the EQs, playing vinyl like a self-contained, vamped instrument, fusing soul, jazz, house and disco into one capacious ardent ball is all part of Theo’s musical expression. He can fuse the rhythmic, disco-based pulse of Chicago house with the modernist motoric soul of Detroit techno, while at the same time pointing to a lineage in African-American music that runs directly from Sun Ra to his very own Sound Signature label.
Theo, whose organic-sounding machine-based dance music incorporates live instruments, human voices and looped recordings, returns to the live arena with a full band for the first time in 10 years. The line-up features soul/funk hero Amp Fiddler on keys, Akwasi Mensah on bass, Duminie DePorres on electric guitar and Academy grad Myele Manzanza on drums alongside Parrish on beats and keys, plus Ideeyah on vocals and dancers from The Unit. They will be revisiting Sound Signature classics old and new.
