Sound Department 012: Lee Burton

  • Lefteris Kalabakas is a born musician. From the young age of 9 he knew that music was his calling and absolute passion. As a teenager growing up in Athens, he studied music and was a guitarist and bassist for various progressive rock and jazz-rock fusion groups-both composing music and collecting records. These early influences would later evolve and transform into a deep passion for electronic music production and djing, both house and techno—making it his lifework. At the age of 19, he began producing his first tracks and djing at local parties. After further advancing his musical style and character over the next few years, he released his debut album "Lullaby" under the moniker: Liberto on the Athens based label Klik records and an e.p. called "Contra" on Klik record's sub-label, Nuevo. These two releases received strong and impressive feedback from the Greek and International press, putting his name on the map of electronic music. In 2007, Liberto & fellow Greek DJ Mihalis Safras teamed up for the first time, producing a unique collaborative style very different from their own individual sound. They released various e.p's and remixes for labels such as Trapez, Cusp, Zenit and Syndikaat which earned the appreciation of the modern techno scene. In the meanwhile, the Liberto and Safras duo launched a record label called "Material," releasing techno music from great producers like Mark Broom and Lee Van Dowski, among others. Material label's releases were played and charted by some of the best dj's in the scene including Dubfire. At the same time, Lefteris Kalabakas was attempting to express himself with more percussive elements and deep sounds; this resulted in the "Plastikk" e.p on Playmobil and "Martini" e.p on Cusp which were charted and acclaimed by many djs. Liberto was booked at some of the best clubs in Greece and also throughout Europe such as U-60311, Mangali (Ger), Solyanka (Ru), A.K.A, The Egg, Micro (UK), Cavo Paradiso, Fuzz (Gr). In 2009 the Lee Burton moniker was born and his first productions were released on Plastic City, Orpheas and Ethink Groove labels. On February 6th 2012, Lee Burton debuted his sophomore album project "busy days for fools" released on Klik records.
