VIA 2014 - Detour presents: Matrixxman/TIN Man/Ellie Herring/Paul Fleetwood/Chase Smith

  • HOT MASS SPECIAL EDITION - techno mayhem presented by DETOUR MATRIXXMAN (US/San Francisco) In 2013, Matrixxman’s debut EP “The XX Files” received critical acclaim, garnering praise from the likes of The Fader, Pitchfork, XLR8R and Fact Magazine. His relentless rhythm track “Protocol” has been supported and played by a who’s who of dope underground elite including Levon Vincent, Jimmy Edgar, Jeff Mills, San Soda, Boddika, Pfirter, Danny Daze and Dubfire. Meanwhile on the house side of things, various tunes of his have been rinsed by tastemakers such as Larry Heard, HNNY, Huerco S, Seth Troxler, and Damian Lazarus… to name a few. Endeavoring to construct “the most futuristic shit ever” with just a year under his belt, Matrixxman is a name that will be known for years to come. IN MAN (AT/Vienna) Of Finnish descent, but born and raised in California, TIN MAN now has a home in Vienna, a town perfectly suited to his deep and moody productions. TIN MAN launched his Global A label project in 2005. The first two releases, 'Places' and 'Acid Acid', weighed in at three pieces of vinyl each, and showcased his two major musical passions: fragile deep electronica and acid house. TIN MAN has acclaimed releases on the Finnish record label Sähkö / Keys of Life, Cheap Records from Vienna, and continues with new releases on his own imprint, Global A . While TIN MAN's output is diverse in its references, certain underpinnings can be heard throughout. There is always a strong reference to Acid House music, as well as a strong reference to Ambient and Electronic Pop music from the past 30 years. ELLIE HERRING (US/Lexington) Kentucky-based producer Ellie Herring has been on a steady rise in recent years. July 2013 marked her fourth release, Kite Day EP (Racecar 2013), and showed a more experimental side to her music, followed up with Chipped, a spaced-out EP featuring cut up samples buried in droney beats. Currently working on her next full-length, she's been featured on FACT, XLR8R, VICE, Interview Magazine, Ad Hoc, ISO 50, Autostraddle, and more. CHASE SMITH (US/Pittsburgh) With a focus on live hardware house/techno sets with elements of improvisation, Pittsburgh based producer/dj Chase Smith has been working out of Machine Age Studios since 2009. His vinyl releases on W.T. Records, Argot Music, R-Zone, Harmony Society, Pittsburgh Tracks and Technoir Audio showcase a wide variety of styles with a common melodic, Detroit influenced thread throughout. You can catch also him weekly on WRCT 88.3FM with “Detour & Company”. PAUL FLEETWOOD (US/Denver) Not only a skilled DJ but also an OG/co-founder of many Pittsburgh platforms (including this one - Hot Mass) serving up quality electronic music. VIA is a festival, series of events, and creative collective based in Pittsburgh, PA, that explores the intersection of music, new media art, and technology IRL and online.
