DJ MITSU THE BEATS (Jazzy Sport/Japan)
The Red Bull Music Academy takes its Club Night series around the country in September with Japan’s DJ Mitsu The Beats at the controls. Repping the Jazzy Sport crew out of Tokyo – the host city for this year’s RBMA takeover – Mitsu brings over a decade of experience and a command of hip-hop and house grooves down under.
DJ Mitsu The Beats and fellow Jazzy Sport rep Whassupski kick off their Australian jaunt at Sugar (Adelaide) Wednesday 24 September, then play Goodgod Small Club (Sydney) Thursday 25, Boney (Melbourne) Friday 26 and wrap up their whirlwind trip at The Bird in Perth on Saturday 27 September. Australian RBMA alumni Ross McHenry (London 2010), Mako (Rome 2004) and Kano (Rome 2004) are among a raft of local supports who’ll set the scene – check the line-up and RSVP details below.
Mitsu cut his teeth as a hip-hop battle DJ, perfecting his technique with countless hours of practice before eventually hooking up with home town homeboy DJ Kentaro (2002 DMC World Champion). He’s since impressed many with his studio work, both as part of the Gagle group and as a solo artist – his 2003 drop New Awakening earnt him the instant respect of tastemaking DJs such as Gilles Peterson and Benji B. He’s dropped four more solo LPs since, been remixed by a veritable who’s who of hip hop and soul, and has remixed everyone from Jazzy Jeff to Madlib.
To join the RBMA party with DJ Mitsu The Beats and friends, punters must RSVP for free entry. Entry is on a first come, first served basis, so early arrival is highly advised.
